Buying Annual Pass in advance

We are wanting to buy annual passes in advance and were wondering, from the purchase date is that when they get activated or when you go to the park for the first day???

My understanding is that even though you buy it in advance your 'year' doesn't begin until you actually use it. Kind of like how when I upgraded my park hopper it is good for a year from the first day that I used that park hopper.

Just as the pp said the AP will be activated when you use it the day you enter the park. If I were you I would buy a 3+ day PH ticket first before you buy the AP because you can take advantage of the MM on the multiday PH ticket. Once you use the MM, you can go to the AP center and upgrade to the AP.

Unfortunately with an AP you'll only get MM by staying on site at one of the Resort hotels (GCH, DLH, PPH). One way to at least get one final MM if you don't stay on site is to purchase a park hopper that has a MM included (3-day) and then upgrading it to the AP after you use your MM.

I've done this before and yes, Belle is right. The AP is active from the date of first use, not the date of purchase. We got AP vouchers for Christmas from DBF's parents in Dec 08, we activated mine & DBF's early Jan 09, we activated the girls Feb 09. The passes were good for 1 year from the date of first use.
We didn't mind, MM wasn't a big deal for us so we were OK with not having that. Besides we did know that by staying on site we could get MM.

The passport will be activated the first time you go DL or CA. If you buy it online today, but don't use it until February 2nd, the passport will then run through February 2nd of next year.

Correct.

And of course you do not get the AP discounts until you have the AP.

We try to plan it so we purchase our APs the day of our MM.

We do not do any big meals like character meals until after we purchase our APs.
