So my partner and I will be buying a new car soon. We have saved and will be paying cash for the car.
I was thinking can we put the car on our Disney Visa and then just pay off the visa to get the points.

We are looking to buy a Ford Focus, the dealer said we can pay for the car on a credit card.

I wasn't sure if you can earn that many points at once or if there it a limit.

Many dealers will only let you put a certain amount (ex under $3000) on the card, not the entire amount.

I stated in my post I had already asked the dealer and hey said we could, my real question was will disney visa give us that many points at once.

OP, it's really great that the dealer will allow that. That's highly unusual.
Not many people have a credit limit on their cards high enough to pay for a car either.

You asked about putting the entire amount specifically on a credit card?

My DH just bought a Charger. When he first asked the same question they told him yes. When it came in they only let him put 5000. There is no max amount for rewards.

I'm not aware of any limit on the 1% rewards for the Disney Visa. Cards often put limits on the higher reward levels, but more often the issues with buying cards with CC comes from the dealership - which you've clearly already taken care of.

Though, honestly, for a purchase that large I'd get a card that's going to give you better rewards than the 1% Disney will give you. It would be totally worth it, to me, to open up a Citi Double Cash and get at least 2% back & take the rewards as cash. An extra 1% isn't much, but on a purchase that large, it would be enough to matter, to me.

That is the only credit card we have and put most things on it and pay it off at the end of the month.

OP, come back after your purchase to let us know how it goes.

And I agree with the poster that suggested getting a card with better rewards before you buy....if the bank allow a big enough credit limit for the purchase. You'll make so much more using it (we do cash rewards on all our CCs, except Disney Visa...which I rarely use...as its the worst rewards card we own).

I have bought 2 cars using credit cards and were only allowed to charge $5000 each time. Its great that the dealership is letting you put the entire cost towards the car.

If they are letting you pay for an entire car on a credit card then that means they didn't give you the best price on the car. They pay a % of the transaction in fees to the credit card company so they have that money baked in to the price of the car. You are likely spending. 3-5% more to get 1% cash back.

It could be that the salesman is saying yes but when you get in with the finance person they will say no. My brother in law tried to do this once and they told him he couldn't.

Do let us know if it works. Good luck!

My mom bought a toyota camry on her discover card, that's probably 10 years ago. If you don't have the credit limit yet, I'd call now and get that approved before buying the car.

As others have stated, most dealerships will cap CC transactions or charge a fee. Double check the fine print.

Our last three vehicles were all charged on credit cards to earn points, then paid off immediately or transferred to 0% cards without fees, and paid off before the promotional rate expired. No fees or interest, and a great way to earn extra points. Ford, Chevy and Mazda dealerships all agreed eventually, but it helped that we were willing to walk away.
