Buying a Cell Phone ... how can I do this?

I'd like to buy a new cell phone (a Kyocera, not sure which model yet). My cell phone contract was a gift, I'm at the midpoint of it now, and I don't want to sign a more extended contract in order to get the better phone deals at Verizon. Can I buy a phone independently and configure it myself? Can this be done? If so, any recommended vendors?

You have to make sure that the cell phone is compatible with your carrier but once you do that, you can buy any cell phone you want. You don't have to extend your contract, you just have to call them up and give them the serial # of the phone from under the battery and they will activate it for you. The only thing is you won't be able to get any of the rebates on the phone... those are only for extending contracts or new ones, but if you are willing to pay full price on a phone you have a lot of flexibility.
