Buyer beware when renting

Allow me to preface this with the reality that there are hundreds or thousands of honest, reliable DVC members looking to rent out their points.

But this has been front page news here in Cincinnati for the last few days:

I'm not even sure if this woman actually was a DVC member, but the more recent developments in the case are that she allegedly pulled this scam on dozens of families.

I haven't personally ever rented points, but after seeing this in the news all week, I'm a lot more likely to use a broker if I ever do so. Really sad to see, and most likely the woman will go to jail, but the families won't be able to collect any money back as she has apparently spent it all.
 
We used a broker for our 'try DVC out' trip. It was still hard to rely on someone unseen to make the reservations and trust they wouldn't cancel them, but the brokers hold the $ in escrow so at least you know you'd get your $ back if they did.
