My husband has a DVC membership that he purchased years ago. We married this past May. We need more points. Merging of families we don't have enough. I was planning on purchasing points with my own contract, he suggested I add on to his.
My thoughts were it would be better to have two contracts.
As far as planning in future, I would leave my contract to my kids, his to his children. My thoughts are it would be hard for 4 adult kids with starting familes to divide up on who gets to use.
Would you buy at the same resort? Benefits of buying at same resort? Any cons?
Thanks... Newbie here..

Unless the new contract is titled exactly the same as his (which I assume is in his name only as he bought before you were married) it won't be the same membership even if you buy at the same resort.
Where does he own and is it a resort that you like as well?
What size villa will you need?
Will you go to WDW every year, every other year, every third year?
Will you usually book during the 8-11 month home resort booking advantage. At 7 months points are equal and you can combine points from 2 different home resorts to book at either if there's availability (or where ever else there's availability.)
If you get more points in the resort he owns then you can pool the points to reserve a bigger villa to suit your larger family at 11 months at that resort.
But, if you chose another resort you can alternate resorts. One year you go to his resort, banking or borrowing to double the usable number of points for a larger villa at his current home resort at 11 months. The next year you go to the new resort banking or borrowing the new points at the new resort to double up and book a bigger villa there.
Personally I own at one resort and am looking to buy my second contract at a different resort (resale) so that I can alternate resorts as I like variety.

IMO buying DVC to leave it to your kids is a mistake. Who knows if they will want it, what will DVC be worth then, will you even want DVC in 10 years?

I would re-title the DH deed to add you to it, then if you need more points, decide what you want, a home resort advantage at a different resort or additional points at the existing resort.

In most situations i'd change the current title and then do the resale purchase. If the home resort will be different it's less important. If a different UY would give additional protection, it won't help much. The main advantage to having them same UY under one master is to use them together at 11 or 7 months out. The main advantages to a different master are if a different UY gives additional protections and for additional wait lists. You might ask DVC about doing an add on and changing the current registration as one event but that's only reasonable if it makes sense to buy retail anyway.
