Buy AP, then reserve room? Or visa-versa?

The title says it all! If we want a room discount, do we need to purchase AP's first? If we pay full price for the room, can we get a discount after the fact? Thanks!

I believe that you can book with an AP discount and then you just have to present your AP at the front desk within 24 hours of checking in. :goodvibes
 
You do not need it to book but you do need to show it upon check in. We did it this way our last trip.

You can book with an AP discount without having the actual AP and while it's supposed to be shown at check in, some people have reported not even being asked for it. With that said, you should be given 24 hours to show it if it's requested ;).
