DH decided he wants Star Trek on blu ray for his birthday next week. Only problem- we don't have a blu ray player! I already bought him one of those little Kodak handheld camcorder thingys for his big B'day gift, so he's going to be waiting for Xmas for the player. I've been trying to convince him that its so much better to get a PS3 instead, to make us both happy, serve as a combined gift, and be fun for 3 DDs as well. His point is that we already have PS2, Xbox360, and Wii (all bought for me for various occasions but honestly played much more by DDs and him, LOL). I am greatly opposed to getting a blu ray just to see a slightly better picture, but he feels that we don't need every gaming system & that I don't play enough. I'm thinking that if I can get a deal on Black Friday, it'll be a no brainer, but he's still iffy. What makes the most sense?????

We struggled with this decision and decided to get the player. If you are a big gaming family I would lean toward the PS3.

ETA: That I found it funny that you are for the PS3 and your DH is against it. It is normally the other way around.

I agree!

I've heard the PS3 blu-ray is the best...but if you have all the other gaming systems, I'm sure the difference between the PS3 blu-ray and a blu-ray exclusive machine won't be noticed

1. I grew up with a big brother who always saved up his paper route $ to get the best, latest systems (Atari back then :rotfl:)
2. I like all the girly, kiddie, and dance games, so its ok....:rolleyes1

I'm trying to use that arguement with my wife. For $100 more than a good bluray player I can add anothe gaming system.

DH keeps telling me we are not getting a bluray player for the living room, we are getting a ps3!

Good call -- this is one of those movies that is best seen on Blu-ray...

Only problem- we don't have a blu ray player!

That can be easily corrected -- lots of Blu-ray players will be sold on Black Friday!

Really?? Not to sound sexist or anything negative, but have you seen the games that are available for PS3? Many of the titles (IMO) seem to appeal to either young teenage males or hardcore gamers -- it's nothing like Wii, that's for sure (lots of games rated either "T" or "M").

I am greatly opposed to getting a blu ray just to see a slightly better picture...

"Slightly" better?? How about "better than you could ever imagine" for starters? Plus, since this is all about Disney, how about "Disney wants you to get a Blu-ray player"? Why else would they deeply-discount all the new releases from the vault...

I'm thinking that if I can get a deal on Black Friday, it'll be a no brainer, but he's still iffy. What makes the most sense?????

There's not going to be any true "deals" on PS3, come next week -- Blu-ray players, OTOH, will be abundant, and discounted at all major retailers.

For these rest of you interested in Blu-ray, there is a lot of good information at the Blu-ray website.

but you'd lose if she counters, "yes, but then you have to buy $50 GAMES, compared to $20 movies!!!"

Let me start out by saying I'm a 'gamer' and was struggling if I wanted to get the PS3 but wound up going for the straight Blu-Ray player. I bought a Samsung model where you can stream Netflix, YouTube, Blockbuster (what's that? ;-) and Pandora Internet Radio. Aside from that, DD uses a lot of the BD-Live features on our BDs. Plus, as someone previously posted, you can get some serious deals on BF for a blu-ray player.

I watched 'Star Trek' on Blu-Ray last night and it is absolutely stunning! :goodvibes

We bought the PS3 - we like the idea of getting 2 features for a small amount of money more...ie gaming system and blue ray vs. blue ray.

You get a sony blue ray for 150 now and the PS3 is down to 199 -to me it is worth the extra $40 to get the ps3....

Whatever you decide - blue ray is totally worth it!

An outstanding gaming system for $100 and a Blueray player to boot. We did it.

I'd go for the PS3. A lot of games are made for each console, so if you're going to spend 50$ on a game for the Wii... just get it for the PS3 instead. As a hard core gamer, some games just have better controls with different systems. And you never know, you might find a console specific game that you like and you're glad you got the ps3. Nothing wrong with having everything.
We've always used the playstation for DVD player, we never bothered with the stupid remote for xbox. So if we ever get a blu-ray player, it'll be because of a PS3.

I don't have either but have friends that are hard core gamers. They get a separate bluray player. A few have had the PS3 die from over use. Playing games and watching movies, the unit is on all the time. But if you are a light gamer it might be okay.

Way back in May before price drops came into play...DS decided that he was going to get PS3 for his graduation gift....so we bought the most expensive unit at that time($499 or $399 we ended up spending over $800 with a couple games and controllers and remotes) Now DH and all 3 boys are heavily into Xbox 360...we bought the Wii last year and it just sits there looking sad waiting for someone to take interest..my mom bought a Wii for her house thinking the boys would go gaa gaa over it and the boys will play it when there..but they make sure they look tortured the whole time. PS3 is now a glorified Blu Ray player.....I am the only one who uses it for my NetFlix subscription that sends BluRay discs...99% of the games come in both 360 and PS3 formats and my crew all favor the 360...it's hard to make the leap to PS3 when you already have your circle of friends to play with established on Xbox live. We wasted money on it...he has only used it to play games for maybe 3 hours and that was it.

One thing that will set it apart in the near future is the ability to use your NetFlix subscription to watch instant movies without having to purchase a 'live' account like you do on xbox...I think you will be able to rent games online as well.

sooooooo how much you willing to sell the Wii for?? ;)

We have a PS3 (I'm not a gamer and DH is occasionally). PS3 has not teamed up with Netflix so I'm excited about that. That may be a reason to tip the scales toward the PS3.

You ask what makes the most sense when you have a PS2 and Xbox360 and Wii already?!?! "Sense" went out the door long ago!! :lmao:

Seriously, do you NEED another gaming system? If you didn't have those other 3 already, then I'd be the first to say get the PS3. But seriously, you don't need the PS3. Get a Blue Ray player instead.

Also, like another poster has stated, the games for a PS3 are much more geared towards the young male demographic. If you daughters are into sporting games or first person shooters then it might make sense, but I just don't see it. :confused3

We were weighing our options with this very same question. We also already own a Wii and a PS2. We decided to go ahead and get the PS3. We get a gaming system, blue ray player and we can stream netflix movies (with a disc you get from netflix) all in one. :)
