Business etiquette question

Hey regular poster here, sworn off of posting anything remotely personal on the community board...I've learned it'll come back and bite me in the in future threads.

So here is my question...

I've just got a phenomenal job offer with pay, benefits etc beyond anything I could hope for.

Someone in the company has been encouraging me to apply there for a while, he even sat down with me to chat about what I might like to do within the company. He then put me in touch with someone, who put me in touch with someone else....the outcome being this brilliant job offer

I was wondering if I should send this guy a gift? I've already emailed AND called to say thanks for all his help. It's a very formal company and my relationship with him is professional not personal, so I don't want to be ungrateful, but I don't want to act innaproppriately and I certainly don't want to seem weird or over-the-top, particularly as we'll now be colleagues.

What do you guys think?

Thanks! I think that might be a good idea. Maybe when I start I'll ask him. I don't want to sound like I'm coming on to him though. I'm sooooo not! He's old enough to be my father.

Lunch would be safe. Ethically speaking, I wouldn't give him a gift. It could be construed as a bribe or other form of payment for his "services" (putting you in contact with the right people). Depending on how old and/or formal the company is, and how much weight they put on "ethics" - it may not look good for you or him.

I know this sounds crazy and some may not understand. But from someone who often has to scrutinize every gift, lunch offer, "business trip", etc. it is better to be safe than sorry.

Another thing I was wondering (if anyone is still reading) is whether I should contact the hiring manager. She interviewed me (twice) and will be my boss, but it was human resources who let me know I'd got the job.

Should I get in contact with my future boss or just wait till I start?

We can't accept anything of monetary value. Even lunch with a vendor is suspect if it happens too often.

I miss the football tickets and freebies.
