Since we aren't familiar with Tampa, does anybody recommend a good hotel near Busch Gardens? Thanks

YES!!!

Be very weary of places around Busch Gardens--this is a really seedy area!!!!!

Top on my list would Embassy Suites next to USF in Tampa. It's not far from Busch Gardens, is one of the newer hotels and is in a decent area. MOSI is near it as well if you are interested. (Museum of Science and Industry--really a great place for kids--I swear!!!!)

Also, we like to stay at the Holiday Inn Express in the "new Tampa" area off of Bruce B. Downs. This area has a ton of decent restaurants, stores and a newer movie theater. It's also a nicer, safer area than that near BG. While it's no frills, it's clean and comfortable and most of all, safe!

Both hotels are about a 5 to 10 minute ride to BG, depending on traffic.

NOTE: I would not stay anywhere across the street or near the property from BG as it's really seriously not a great area.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to add: We lived in Tampa for 11 years before settling in Georgia. We visit friends there frequently.

I am assuming you have a car. I agree with the above poster about hotels near BG. There are some nice ones around USF, but depending on the time of year you are visiting they might be booked. I would also check out Marriott waterside in downtown tampa. I really like this hotel, they have a rooftop pool and you would have a canal view. Across the street is the new Embassy suites, too. Also, both are within walking distance to Channelside ( a fun area filled with restaurants, movie theatre, bowling and pool tables . Or you could try the renaissance at International Mall. Its a great spot at night, many restaurant/bars, plus upscale shopping. It is very easy to get to BG from any of these places. I currently live in Clearwater, which is right next to Tampa.

We went a few years back and stayed at the Best Western near Busch Gardens, we were there for 2 nights and had no complaints with the hotel. We were barely in the room, just at night when we finished at the park. It was quite and clean and the restaurant was good too. Things may have changed since then but we had a good time.

I also agree with other posters, Busch Gardens is not in the best area of Tampa, its like driving down the highway and it pops up on the corner!

We also went to the Florida Aquarium on that visit and my kids loved it!

Hope you have fun :)
