Bursitis: What's your home remedy??

After a very long process of elimination, it was found that my grandmother has bursitis in her hip joint. When finally being released, the doctors just said to use some OTC pain meds.

3 days later, she's in severe pain again. Last week it was 2 or 3 days before the pain became unbearable and was advised to go to the hospital. After nearly 2 days of laying in bed (the most comfortable for her), the pain pretty much went away... enough that she totally forgot about being in pain and said to the doctors that she was just fine. Got up, walked around, and then laid down back in bed. :rotfl: This was the first night after being admitted, she was in pain for the ER doctor.
Any case, back to 2-3 days doing normal things at home, the pain has come back severely. Once again, laying in bed is the easiest on her hip, but even by 5am she was in pain.

She's allergic to Ibuprofen, so that's out. And extra strength Tylenol didn't seem to help much this morning. I don't even think she can get dressed. Any one have some home remedies to help her get through the morning?? She's also cold blooded, so I'm afraid she'd get too cold too quickly with an ice pack. Heat isn't recommended.
There is a doctors appointment later today, but it's still 6hrs away.

Yay, I get to have a loopy woozy grandma. Her choices are tylenol which didn't do enough earlier or vicodine which will probably make her woozy.

Does any one know of any other home remedies??

No home remedies-- ice, rest and anti inflammatories. Since only reptiles are cold blooded as far as I know, as long as you don't put ice directly on the skin and only leave it on for short time periods with a rest in between (never more than 20 minutes of it on) she should be okay unless her doctor specifically said not to use it.

Can they do a Cortisone Shot? I had bursitis in my hip about 15 years ago and after weeks of pain, Physical Therapy and the above treatments with no help I had one cortisone shot and haven't had a problem since. I am needle and pain phobic but they numbed the hip and I didn't watch.

If she is in that much pain then I would also give her the Vicoden. Pain is much worse than woozy. As long as she remains lying down woozy shouldn't be a problem. Just don't let her post on the DIS or the tag fairy may never let her forget it. . .;)

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. She's got a muscle relaxer and the pain medication.

She might not be a true cold blood, but she sure acts like it. She thinks anything below 95 degrees is cool. She's always saying she wants to go back to Miami, but I think she blocks out the cool winters down there. She can be in the dead heat of summer here in Texas, and she'll be wearing black pants and a black sweater. She'll walk outside and say "don't need my jacket out here", but she'll need it once she walks inside some place, even the car.
She did get a steroid shot in her hip, but it's still aching her. I hope it goes away, my aunt won't be able to keep her woozy and wobbly all the time.
