how does it work on thier airline? do they only give you credit or a one or two way voucher? Do they give you a ticket for the next plane out or do you go standby? I think we are going to take them next time but wanted to know how it works so if we get the chance we can take it, as our plans are very flexable. If we could get free tickets then we could go again. Thanks

I've gotten voluntarily bumped several times over the years but never on Southwest (and I have flown them at least a couple times a year for over 10 years). They must do a pretty good job of filling but not overselling their flights. With that said, whenever you are bumped by any airline, you are supposed to be re-booked onto another flight, not just abandoned to standby status. Usually you are told what the alternative booking will be before you commit to give up your seat (so you can back out if need be). It may or may not be the "next flight out" - depends on how full those are, too. Sorry I can't tell you what form of compensation SW tends to give out but I'm sure someone else will.

Involuntary bump: In most cases they (any airline including Southwest) must give you a cash payment and also book you on the next flight of theirs that is not sold out. (I don't think Southwest flies any aircraft with fewer than 60 seats so I don't think there are any exceptions for their bumping without paying cash.)

Voluntary bump: Vouchers, typically ranging from a $100. gift certificate to a free round trip certificate, are offered and they will honor your ticket but it could be stand by only. Whatever they offer including the replacement flight will be announced in advance. Stories on these forums suggest that Southwest often offers free round trip vouchers.

While I was waiting for a flight at MCO on SW earlier this year, an announcement was made. They had overbooked and were looking for two volunteers. The offer was guaranteed seating on the next flight to their destination and $100 in cash. I didn't think it was a bad deal, but I had to get home and could not take advantage of it.

I agree with above poster.....we fly SW almost exclusively PHL/MCO and I only remember one trip where they were looking for volunteers and that was only because an earlier flight ended up cancelled due to weather conditions, which is pretty rare, usually they just delay them if needed.
