For our cities festivities we have started having an outdoor movie night last summer. It was one movie, one night, free of charge for kids in the city park. This years movie was supposed to be Eight Below, until we found out that it was actually illegal to show a movie in public.

I've never read the fine print of the movie's copyrights, just new it was illegal to copy and sell copies of movies. I understand the law, just not sure I totally agree with it. I mean, odds are there would be at most 50 people there, maybe 12 families. So the film makers, artist are losing out on revenue because the movie was being shown? :confused3 Odds are if it was a really good movie, like I think Eight Below is, it would send them out to buy there own copy of the movie.

Oh well, just really bummed that all these regulation keep people from having a good time and just generally enjoying each others company.

We have outdoor movies all the time around here. We just had Finding Nemo and there were about 300 people there. That is such a shame that your city cancelled it. The kids had so much fun.

I have never heard of that before. I know places around here have shown movies outside before. TCM sponsers a summer long event at a local park. They show old movies for free. All you have to do is come with a blanket and bug spray and watch the movies. They even hand out free paper fans and raffle off gifts.

I should rephrase that...we could do it if we wanted to by a license which could range from $150-$350 to rent the movie from a licensed place. We are a small town of 1200 people and a. it's too late to get the license and b. we're not sure it's worth the expense. It's something that would have to be looked at for next year.

Apparantly, it's against the law to play a movie in a bus, too.

Yes, licenses should be purchased for showing movies -or movie clips -in public. This includes the instances listed, as well as clips shown in churches or other religious gatherings. Our church is screening "Nanny McPhee" at an upcoming fellowship night; we were certain to have our licensing in order before planning
