My wife and I bought a new(to us) home this fall and had plans to create a flower garden so we bought couple hundred dollars worth of bulbs. Our plans changed and are building an addition in the spring so we dont know where to plant the bulbs just yet. The ground is already freezing at night here in Ma. Is there a safe way to store them indoors for the winter or do I have to put them in the ground to keep them alive?

TIA

Welcome to the DIS, and especially to the Flower & Garden board, Steve. :)

Congrats on the new home!! :)

Steve, is there somewhere other than where the addition is planned, where you could plant your bulbs? I would be very tempted to go ahead and plant them. I know tulips are very adaptable and can often be planted right up until Dec, as long as the ground isn't frozen.

Not all the bulbs will survive, but probably more than if they are stored (in a cool, dry place) over winter. Plus, you'll have something to brighten up your construction site! :)

Here's a link that shows you a bulb planting timeline for New England. You'll see that you're barely outside of the time frame recommended.

Any other advice for Steve from our more bulb savy Buds? :)

Yup, you need to plop them in the ground somewhere.

I am on Cape Cod and I have been known to plant bulbs while my turkey is cooking.:teeth:

Yup, gotta get em in. They have a better chance in the ground. We went a little bulb buying crazy this fall. I'll be planting until TG too.
