I can’t believe it’s been a week of blue skies.

Warm too.

No, I dare say it has been hot. Hot and sunny.

A pleasant departure from the norm of hot, humid and pouring down rain.

I’ve never seen rain like this before. It rains all day. And not the misty rain of the Pacific Northwest. No, it is a torrential downpour hour after hour, day after day.

It begins to get on one’s nerves.

The past two weeks, though? Mostly pleasant.

Weather wise anyway.

It makes living here seem not so bad.

Here?

Well here, for now, is Fiji.

Not the Fiji you see on movies or in magazines. We live in the rainy part of Fiji.

The part without beaches!

The part with pollution and crowds.

We’ve been on this rock for almost 9 months (well this and other similar rocks). While that may not sound like a long time for us it has been too long.

We’re going island crazy. We need to get away.

As luck would have it there is a conference in Orlando in November that pertains to our chosen profession (although we don’t currently practice our chosen profession!). We submitted an abstract and had it accepted so now we have to go.

The conference hotel, however, is far too expensive. Much cheaper to stay at the RPR. A shame really, how will we survive?

Aside: Have you noticed that the RPR is a tropically themed resort? Have you noticed that at the RPR they greet you by saying “Bula”?

Did you know Fiji is a tropical island? Did you know Fijian’s greet each other with a hearty “Bula”?

For those not comprehending what I’m, as the kids say, “throwing down” our island escape is taking us to a hotel that is themed after the island we are trying to escape.

It will, I guess, lessen the culture shock.

Yes, that’s it.

This hotel allows us to slowly re-integrate into the developed world. We’re doing it for our mental health!

Fiji is, after all, a developing country.

Poverty. Sickness. Military government. Censored media. No constitution.

You know; that kind of place.

Don’t get me wrong. We don’t live a rough life. We have it pretty good. We’re doing work that we think is good work and that will hopefully open even bigger doors in the future.

Despite the good work we’re doing it’s still tough to be away from the comforts of home.

The comforts of North America.

Family.

It’s only been nine months, it will be ten by the time we arrive at our escape, but it seems like a lifetime.

I know many have been away for longer but we need an escape and we’re, how shall I say, stoked that we can escape to Orlando. Well, actually, we’re stoked that we can escape to Universal Orlando.

You may have met us before.

This isn’t our first trip report.

That means it isn’t our first trip.

Our first trip was way back in 2006 and was a short off-site trip after I finished graduate school. We were joined by my brother and my parents. We had fun.

Our second trip was with my whole family in August 2007. A big group. There were 12 of us. When that trip was planned my wife and I were living in Palestine. We went from our flat to work and back to our flat. Sometimes we would go to the grocery store. We were not allowed to go really anywhere else.

Due to being trapped in freezing cold flat we read a lot of websites.

One of them was this here one.

We decided that it would be awesome if we got a few rooms at Universal so that we could get FOTL passes for the whole crew.

We did the whole Orlando thing on that trip. A few Disney days and two Universal days. We stayed in a rented house for most of that trip but family was convinced to stay at Universal for a night to get two days of FOTL passes.

We reserved the rooms over Skype, while we lived in Palestine. We still laugh about speaking to the lovely reservations person while we were listening to gunshots in the background. Now that trip was a true escape and you can read about it here if you so desire.

Our last trip to the Darkside occurred between gigs in Nome, Alaska. I started a trip report about that Universal only trip while stuck, due to weather, in a remote Alaskan village.

We had a lot of fun on that trip.

Upon our return I learned I should take more care in writing a trip report (see why here).

So I will.

Why write? Because I like to, and I’m bored. And it’s a way to ignore the pressing work I should be doing. Who wants to work on Saturday?

Why a pre-trip report? Well because, to borrow a commercial from the Mouse, “we are too excited to sleep.”

It is still five weeks away but it is the light at the end of a dark, long tunnel.

We are excited. Probably too excited for two people our age but excited we are.

Next up?

Well, I’ll introduce you to the gang going on this Bula-palooza.

By the time we’re done it might be a rather large gang.

The People

This started out as a two person voyage. My wife, let’s call her Swell, and I were going to go to Orlando a few days prior to our conference to hang out at Universal and have some fun.

Here we are enjoying the Fiji sun:

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6r7jyAggmpsi0-wzEKGLdw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_s0xy8KwXgnM/SctIbU93wlI/AAAAAAAAFjk/AN6jzg-3wEQ/s400/The%20Pearl%20038.jpg" /></a>

As is typical of Swell she decided “Let’s invite people!” So the invitations flew out fast and furiously.

The first to accept her invitation? Her parents. Given an opportunity they will fly around the world to spend 15 seconds with their daughter. Once the invitation was given they immediately said yes. Swell’s father works in the airline industry and happened to have some positive space tickets available. It turned out that seats were available to Orlando so they are all booked and ready to go.

Unfortunately due to our conference schedule, their work schedule and Swell’s mother’s need/want to spend as much of her vacation time as possible in Romania they will only be joining us from Sunday night until Wednesday morning. Two full days.

Here they are enjoying the Fiji sun a number of months ago:

My “sister” also accepted the invitation. I say “sister” because she isn’t related to me but sees my family more than I do. We call her the good one. She is my sister’s housemate and has been a family friend since childhood. She spends every Christmas, birthday, holiday, family day with my family. She has three weeks of vacation she has to use before the end of the year so she said she would join us. While she has accepted the invitation she is still holding out for cheaper airfare. If airfare increases rather than decreases she will probably cancel.

Here she is (on the right - in Romania):

The last of the many invited who may accept is G. She is Swell’s best friend even though they haven’t live anywhere near each other in almost a decade. G recently moved back to the mainland from Maui and is finding the transition difficult. She will join us if she can find airfare and decides that this type of holiday is worth the money it will cost.

Here she is with Swell in Romania:

The Travel

Swell and I have the worst of the travel itineraries. Our total travel time – and you might want to sit down for this – is nearly 31 hours. We really have a planes, trains and automobiles trip ahead of us.

We will leave the city of our residence at 3:30 pm local time Saturday 7 November on a coach to the international airport (about 4 hours away via said coach).

We then catch a direct flight to LAX at 10:50 pm Saturday 7 November and arrive at 1:05 pm Saturday 7 November.

Did you catch that? Due to the miracle of the international date line we arrive in LA BEFORE we leave Fiji.

That is where the coolness ends as we have a 9 hour layover in LAX.

LAX is the worst airport I have ever been to. We actually reserved a hotel room at a “half day” rate so we’ll spend our time showering, changing, exploring something nearby and then maybe catching a nap.

It should be fun, although we would much prefer a short layover.

There are no flights from LAX to FL during the time we are there. Only the red eye. We tried every which way but no luck.

So we fly all night again and arrive in Orlando just after 6 the next morning. We should have a rental car reserved and be ready to hit the road.

Swell’s parents have a trip ahead of them as well. Because they are flying via an airline employee ticket they can only fly out of Seattle (they live just across the river from Portland, Oregon). The flight to Orlando is in the morning and there is only one flight from Portland to Seattle that would get them there on time. They would have to fly standby for this flight, therefore, they are going to get up early on Sunday morning and make the three hour drive to Seattle. They will then hop on the direct flight to Orlando arriving at 4ish.

The good one will probably leave Edmonton, Canada on Saturday and return home on the next Friday. It remains to be seen what actually happens.

G? We don’t know about G’s travel. We’ll see about that later.

Next up? The Plan

I promised you a plan and a plan you shall receive.

It has been super busy at work but as I type this we are slightly over 24 hours from boarding our plane to fly back to the States for the first time in a long 10 months.

We are beyond excited. This has been, without a doubt, the most difficult year of my life.

Our group has been finalized. Sunday will be me, Swell and the Good One. Monday and Tuesday will be the three of us plus Swell's parents. Wednesday the Good One will be on her own as Swell and I go to our conference. Thursday afternoon Swell and I will skip out of our conference early to hang out with the Good one who leaves early Friday.

Friday will be a long conference day for Swell and I and we will spend Saturday morning visiting the parks for the last time.

Our plan is the simplest of plans.

Eat. Sleep. Go on rides.

That's it. Eating will take priority.

This is a snippet of an email I sent the Good one that outlined our plan.

"Hey,
...You will be in the room by yourself on Saturday night so you get the pick of the beds, we will be making sure, though, that our welcome gift doesn't get there until we do (milk and cookies - DON'T STEAL OUR COOKIES!).

...Swell and I have big plans to ride a lot of rides and do a lot of eating. Parks are only open 9 to 6 so we want to get an early jump on things on M and T. We don't mind skipping some things. Everyone going has been before so we will just hit everyone's favourites.

Fair warning - Swell and I love, love, love Men in Black. We will want to do that a number of times (in a row). I NEED to do the Simpsons (it is new from the last time we were all there - used to be Back to the Future - same ride different theme) and really, really want to try to do the new roller coaster. The new roller coaster does NOT have front of the line open yet. We will need to either ride single riders (which is not open all the time) or go early enough in the morning to avoid the two hour lines. I think that we will be there at a slower time of the year so perhaps the wait won't be too bad.

Another fair warning - I love Duddley (the log ride) but they went and ruined it by putting lap bars in it. It is extremely hard to get in and out of now. We will give it at least one shot but if it is terrible we will not do it again. It is AWKWARD.

Restaurants onsite that we want to eat at:

* Bubba Gumps
* Margaritaville
* Mythos (awesome in the park restaurant that will make you wet your pants)
* Finnegan's (it's a tradition - remember the Scotch eggs?)
* Maybe Latin Quarter

Cheap restaurants we would like to eat at onsite

* Panda express

Possible restaurants offsite

* Cheesecake factory
* Chik-fil-A
* Panera
* Wafflehouse (?)"

The reason food is so high on our priority list is simply because we haven't had North American food in such a long time. It's amazing what you miss.

So that's the plan.

In about 36 hours we'll be in LAX and I'll be guzzling Dr. Pepper.

Can't wait.

Looking forward to reading more :thumbsup2

Really like your choice of restaurants at Universal/Citywalk and Cheesecake factory :cloud9:
