What do you mean three practicums? Does that mean you never student taught?

So are you trying to find a job in the alternate route? Many places around here will NOT hire alternate route candidates.

I have studnet taught once, been working in daycare for 7 years.

Maybe your state does something different? Do you have to do more than one student teaching?

The "new" NCLB statutes in my state changed a lot of certifications and practicums for students that were in coursework during that time frame.

I started school in Fall 2006. I was required to do six field placements as well as a 15 week student teaching. I just graduated last month.

Are you short on Praxis scores? Practicum hours?

I'd personally get that done as soon as possible.

We do four practiums, one thats 80 and three that are 180.

Oh, I see you go by hours. My university went by rotations. The six field (pre student teaching) were one day each either 1/2 day or full day - depending on where you are in your course levels.

Plus you couldn't do field unless you had you Praxis scores in for whatever rotation you were in.

Then student teaching was 15 weeks full day, every school day.

I know some schools do by hours, we did it by rotations.

15 x 6 (field) = 90 days plus 15 weeks student teaching M-F. ( I think 90 days with that as well) 90 + 90= 180 180 is the standard length of school years in my state.

I WOULD sub if I could find someone who wanted me. I CANT find anything and at this rate am going to loose my aparment.

get off your rear end, and get yourself a couple of jobs. your profile said you are 24. quit whining about the economy being the reason you cant get work, and take a look within about why nobody will hire you. if you are about to lose your apartment, do something about it.

Why not take your love for the subject and your love for kids and turn it into something that could be available to a wide range of people? Come up with a novel way of presenting geography or whatever subject you like for a specific age range and put it in a book or video format. Then, see if you can find someone to distribute it for you.

Right now it sounds like you need to concentrate on getting a job, any job. You need to get your finances in order, paying off debt (saw this mentioned in another thread) and paying for your apartment. Then when you are on more solid ground, you can think about business plans. I would also encourage you to finish school (since you are close to being done) before opening a business. That way, if the business doesn't work out, at least you have the proper degree to work in the school system.

If you really want to work in education right now, try applying to day cares as a part time employee. I know when I worked in day care they were always in need of people to work in the afternoon, to supervise naptime, snack, free time, etc. You will gain experience and you may be able to work your way up when someone leaves. You would probably have to get a night job elsewhere, but at least you would be somewhat involved in your field.

Wow, Come here for help and get bashed. I have applied for jobs that are not in my feild and have not gotten any callbacks. I am WORKING HARD at getting a job and dont need to have people bashing me because im in a small town where its hard. I have applied for full and part time.
Feralpeg- that was a wonderful idea. Something to work on.

I am not bashing you. I was just trying to tell you the truth. The truth is, your business plan is likely not a very good idea right now, and you would find yourself in more financial peril for perusing it at this stage in your life. You previously never gave any indication that you were applying for any jobs outside education, that is why it was suggested to you.

I hope you don't get mad again because I do have one more advice to mention. You should try to apply for jobs outside of your town (if you haven't already). I understand work can be hard to find within a small town. Are there any big cities nearby, other towns, suburbs? Even if you have to drive 45 minutes away, it would be worth it to find something. I'm not sure about where you are located, but if there is anything around your town, I would go there.

Also, although perhaps it was brutally honest, I think a PP had a point. You need to look at what you are presenting to these companies when you apply for a job. Perhaps you could improve your resume and cover letter in some way? If you were previously enrolled at a university you could probably go there and have them look at your resume. Even an old professor may be able to help by giving it a quick look. Your university may also have some resources to help you look in the right places. There is nothing wrong with seeking help to put your best foot forward, and most colleges have a lot of resources for this.

You were not the person I was refering to. I am working with a teacher freind at redoing my resume again to see if that helps. I have been applying in other cities too.

That's good, I'm glad to hear you have people helping you out. It's always good to get the opinion of someone in the field.

Sadly, now is a really hard time to find a job. I know in the Orlando area, jobs are incredibly scarce. Please be aware that jobs in the education field will be very hard to come by for the next few years. I have a daughter who will be graduating with a secondary education degree after next year. I am very concerned that she will not be able to find a teaching position. I've encouraged her and I will do the same to you. Find something else that you are good at that relates to education and see if there is a way to make it work for you.

Best of luck!

I would also see what you need to get certified in other subjects. I have two certs (Elementary K-5 and Middle School Language Arts). I am also obtaining my Special Ed cert.

I took the Praxis for Special Ed and I only have four extra classes to go. Here's hoping that the third cert is the charm!

Can you get hired out as a nanny/au pair? In my area there are many professional families that hire certified teachers.

Did you try places like a YMCA or other daycare centers?

is'nt it amazing how few courses it can take with what you already have to get certified (and in some cases earn another degree)?

dh is going into a program that offers a masters of ed and a teaching cert in 18 months (cert done by end of 12 months, masters at the end of the 18th). when he went in to have the university look at his transcripts they crunched the numbers and said "do you realize if you just add these courses you will end up with 3 certifications and 2 additional bachelor's degrees?". we crunched the numbers and it results in just 2 extra quarters of classes:thumbsup2 dh's area of main concentration will be secondary and adult ed in "vocational" education (computers, technology, buisness, job search). our state mandates it as a part of the graduation requirement so there are openings-and we figure that the way the new administration is talking/loss of jobs this is a field that may be in demand.

op-you might see if your area has a local child care council. lic. providers often network through these agencies and they may know of people looking to hire. if their lic. providers have a monthly get-together or meeting you could ask if you could attend and hand out your resume.

i think it's an industry that's being hard hit by the economy-we've had several pre-schools and daycares close localy in recent months. people's hours got cut back so much at work that they can't afford the fees so they opt to quit and become sahm's. some of the kids that used the centers for afternoons (kindergartener's and elementary aged) and school holidays because their private schools did'nt offer programs are dis-enrolling. private school tuition is being cut from allot of household budgets so the kids enroll in public and the parents use the school programs.
