Hi - my youngest was just invited to one of these parties & I was curious as to what happens. Do they serve food? Do you get a bear & an outfit? Will I need to pay for things for the bear or will it all be included? I pulled one of the brochures & it seems the basic is just the bear. If they have a party which is just the bear, I would think that I will have to pay for the additional stuff. I don't know. I know my dd will want everything to go with it but I know I have to rein her in. Just when we were getting rid of all the stuff things because of her asthma!:sad2: Should be fun!

Thanks for any insights!:hippie:

The person who has the party decides what you are going to get. My dd has been to two. At one they gave each girl a budget of $25. My dd got the least expensive bear and then got a complete outfit to go with it. At the second, the kids got their choice of bear of about three bears, and then got to pick one of two outfits. The second way worked much better. The first was too chaotic and the girls were really too young to do the math so there was trouble when they found out that what they had so carefully picked out was over budget.

As for food, our build-a-bear doesn't have food but is in a mall, so the kids had cake and ice cream at one of the restaurants in the mall after making their bears.

If you are really concerned, you should call the Mom who is throwing the party and ask her.

My DD had a BAB about 4 or 5 years ago.

I had each girl get the cheapest bear, which was about $12.00 then.
Each girl was also told they could get 1 outfit.

As far as I know, none of the BABs have party rooms...thus they do not serve food/cake. After the fun at BAB, we went down to Sbarro's. I served cake there & ordered drinks for everyone.

**A great idea for the b-day girl would be to give her a BAB gift card. That's what we give when DD goes to one of these. It allows the b-day child to choose more outfits for her bear.

My DS3 was invited to his first party at BBW. He loved it. Every party is done differently depending on how much the host wants to spend per child. At the party we were at they had a choice of about 5 animals, and then the choice of one outfit that they chose from a group the salesperson pulled out. But they are all different. They do not serve food in the store at all, like the pp stated, you might be doing cake or pizza in the mall afterwards, but that also depends on the host. Don't worry your child will have fun making their new best friend!!!!:paw:

DD went to a BAB party and they ate at the food court in the mall afterwards. Kids were given a selection of bears to choose from and then a budget for their outfits, which was $20. Definitely a nice party, but very expensive for the parent giving the party.

these parties are really popular here in NJ. My step daughter has been to three in the last few months! They are fun, but it can be hard for a child to understand the concept of "budget". There are so many choices in their face! Once we knew what the party budget was we went over what her choices were. We also made it clear that this was not a party for HER. It was for the birthday girl. So she could be happy to just be at the party and get a lovely party favor, or we wouldn't be accepting any more BAB party invitations. She got it. :) She picked a little white bear and a pink t-shirt and was happy with that. She still calls it her "naked" bear. Some of the other girls at the party were pretty bratty about what they wanted (everything!) and there were a few "THAT's NOT FAIR's" when the birthday girl got to pick out two bears and a cartload of outfits. Lots of Gimme monsters. :sad2:

so you may want to go over the idea of budget with your little one before the party. It helps!:thumbsup2

We've been to a couple - usually they do a set price that is set by the parents. They have never had cake or food or anything.

Yesterday we took my daughter there for her birthday. We didnt do the whole reserved party and instead took a few of her friends. That was fun- and we told them they could each spend $30.

The BABW in the Florida Mall has a table set up outside of the store in the mall that they reserve for the cake and gift part of the party after the kids make their friends.

DD had a party there 3 years ago, I kept it small as far as the guests, so I could spend a bit more on each child's friend. They all lived close to us, so after we were done at BABW we came back to my house to make ice cream sundaes and do presents.

The other parties that DD went to they had a $25 limit, and had cake at the table outside the store.

It was a great and really inexpensive party! Since each guest got their "friend" I didn't even bother with the dreaded favor bags!

Definately go with a budget, allow yourself about 1-1/2 to 2 hours, and then go to the food court afterwards. A lot of fun.

DD6 had her last b-day party at BAB in Jan 2007. It was very nice and, from what I can tell, all of the kids had a terrific time.
We chose a budget of $25 per child and let each child pick their own items. That was a bit more complicated than pre-set selections but so many kids already have the standard bears from other parties and DD wanted the new dog. I couldn't let her choose a dog but make the other kids take the less-expensive bears and feel right about it afterward so that's why we just picked a limit and let them decide for themselves.

The party organizer was great with the kids and told each one as they picked out their animals what other items they'd still have $$ left to buy. A couple did get the cheaper bears and complete outfits, others bought a more expensive animal with a sound chip and just a t-shirt. One of the girls picked a pooh bear - her mom remembered last week when I ran into her at school and thanked me again telling me it went with them on vacation.
It was a longer party than expected because the machines in the store had broken so the animals all had to be stuffed by hand with the kids gathered in a circle on the floor. When I walked into the store and was told their compressor was down so a group of kindergarteners would have to stuff their own animals I just groaned. I feared the worst, but that was actually the best part of the day I think and the kids got to take their time stuffing, talking and playing games on the floor that I haven't seen at other BAB parties.

DD had wanted the holiday dress for her newly made dog which would have put her drastically over the party budget so the party planner had put those items aside concealed in a seperate bag that we received at checkout. All the kids received bear condo boxes and a party favor packet from BABW which included coupons, a door hanger sign, magnets, stationary sets, coloring books and a few other little things so we didn't do individual party favor bags.

After the bears were completed we went to the Rainforest cafe in the same mall and had kids meals and cake to end the day. It was a bit pricey - we probably could have done nearly a week of free dining at POP for the same price but she's my last & will only be 6 once so it was a justifiable expense that we split with my parents who had originally planned to give her a party at their house.
The bear bucks we earned from the party will last her for our BABW thru the summer with a little budgeting so that's a terrific side benefit we didn't expect and will save us quite a bit too.
