Does Vero have bugs?? I seem to remember reading on one of the boards about something called "noseeums" which I think are some sort of bug / flea which is in the sand and can give very nasty bites to your legs / ankles

Is this correct and should I be aware of any other sand bugs

Thanks

We have only been to Vero once about two years ago and had a marvelous time but yes what you have heard about the bugs is true. There are "noseeums" and while I am not certain I think they are not sand bugs but more like a tiny mosquito that you cannot visibly see. We had read about them and took a can of off. One evening we went walking to the main building and I realized I had not put on my spray. Then I learned what the bugs were about!!! They can be a serious downer if you are not prepared.

Depending on when you go, "Lovebugs" can also be a problem. They don't bite, but when they're there, they're EVERYWHERE!!!! They land on you, they land on your food, they have no shame -- they're always "attached". ;)

From the countdown in your signature, I don't think you'll run into them though, because they usually appear in April/May and again in the fall.

So do they only come out in the evening / night. I am wondering if it will be OK for my kids to play on the beach during the day without getting bitten

Thanks for the replies :sunny:

Yes, the noseeums are like little mosquitos that come out at night. They are so small you can't see them, which is where they get their name "no see (th)em". As mentioned, treat them like mosquitos and spray yourself with some sort of repellent whenever you are outside at night and you should be fine. They are not sand related, they will bother you on the balcony of your room or while walking to a restaurant or anywhere outside at the resort.

As to bugs on the beach... I remember taking a walk on the beach in the morning to watch the the sun rise and I was being bitten by something around my ankles. I am not sure what they were, but I think it was because it was still dark and cool out. I don't remember being bothered at other times of the day at the beach.

I was there the week it re-opened last November and after my friend and I had returned from a walk on the beach we realised we had been bitten around the ankles and legs. Boy did those bites itch! My friend's legs reacted really badly and stopped her from wearing shorts or a skirt for the remainder of the vacation at WDW. Even now, 6 months later, you can still see marks on her legs. I'll never go on the beach again without some sort of repellent - but I doubt she'll ever go on the beach again :sad2:

As a NATIVE Floridian (now unfortunately living in Ohio) I can atest to the "no-see-um" problem. They are usually only around at sunrise and sunset and the best repellant for them is "AVON SKIN SO SOFT", they hate that stufff! If you have that on they will stay away! Just put it in a spray bottle and spray yourself well. It's also better for your skin that regular bug spray!

Pootle - What time of day did you and your friend take a walk on the beach?

My husband is terribly bothered by mosquitoes and the noseeum's ate him up on a trip to Vero. Mosquitoes seldom bother me and I only had a few bites from the noseeums. He was uncomfortable for many days after their feast on him and will always wear some protection when at Vero. I would advise anyone to go prepared because if they bother you like they do my DH, your trip could be less than comfortable.

no see-ums usually only itch for an hour or so after being bitten, unless you have a reaction

avon skin so soft is very good to repell them - also you might try off botanical which contains the new chemical approved by the gov. to fight mosquitos - it is derived from eucalyptus - the other approved chemical is deet, which works but is a strong chemical

red wine and/or pina coladas seem to help you forget them

if there is no-seeum activity, keep the door to your balcony closed....you will sleep better later!

I take it you drink vast quantities of these rather than rub them on your legs :earboy2: :rotfl2:
