We leave on Mar 10 to go to the World, just wondering if we need to pack bug spray??????

Last week DS got two bites on his ankle, not sure what bit him, but you may want to have it with you rather than wish you did.

Hi!

I wouldn't worry about bug spray during the day, but you might like some at nighttime. If you are viewing the fireworks or are lounging by a lake (especially at places like POR or any hotel near a lagoon), you may want some just in case.

But don't bother putting it on in the daytime...it is not typically needed. In contrast, DEFINITELY use plenty of sunblock! Hope that helps! :flower:

we have never been bitten at Wdw.. until last time.. and I was eaten alive one night watching the fireworks.

I hate the yucky feeling of bug spray on my skin, so use the bug repellant bracelets. You can get them at Wal Mart (back in the lawn and garden area--not with the bug spray). Put one on a wrist and one on an ankle and they work great. I used them last year at my GD's soccer games and everyone around me was being eaten alive, while I didn't get a single bite. Oh! they also glow in the dark like the glow sticks, so would come in handy keeping up with family members. The only thing is, they have that citronella scent to them. Still better than bug spray though.

As an AP holder I have to say I've never had to deal with bugs at WDW. I'm sure you can get bites but primarily from mosquitos I dont think there's ever really a problem.

Now I live in SW Florida and here they spray the entire city. If you live down here you know what I'm talking about. You know, they load up World World II Era Bombers up with mosquito repellant and fly them just over tree top level at like 5:00 am and scare the crap out of you.

Does WDW do this? or Kissimme in general?

I think he was wanting to know what an AP holder had to do with the bug spray situation.

I mean as a local of Florida. Maybe that makes a difference. Sorry.

Those sand fleas, fire ants and mosiquitoes can be a problem. Never hurts to pack along the bug juice. For the after bug remedy, ammonia rubbed on the bite stops the itch. Thats the main ingredient in that itch gel that you pay big bucks for. Just keep daubing the bite with ammonia and rub with ice to control swelling. Only place we have gotten bit, is on the ankle area and the itching will drive you nuts!!

I go to WDW pretty often. Living within 5 miles, I can also comment on the mosquito issue in general. They can be TERRIBLE. At night, anywhere at WDW, you have a chance of getting eaten alive. My town fogs from trucks. I am sure many areas do. Also, after the hurricanes, surrounding counties were spraying the drainage ditches to help kill the larvae.

Having said that, we have had many instances where bug repellant was the only way to be marginally comfortable at WDW. Places that are particularly bad: Around the small ponds at the resorts, the camp fire at FW...

Epcot is not as bad around the lake, because there is usually a slight breeze.

My advice, bring bug juice. Better safe than sorry.

I live in central Florida and the only thing I have found to deter mosquitos is Vanilla Extract. However, instead of carrying that around I found a body spray at Bath and Body that is called "Warm Vanilla Sugar" that actually has vanilla extract in it. Works far better than Off Bug Spray. My husband keeps a bottle of it on his work bench in the garage for when he's working out there in the evenings.

Oh, and No I do not work for Bath and Body.

Really? Wow! Holly loves that scent. She has the 'Wall Flower" with that scent in one of our bathrooms. No wonder I never have a problem with mosquitos in there. :)

Wow, that's terrific if that really works! DS and I are both sensitive to all the chemicals in traditional insect repellants...we'll give it a try!

Thanks!

If you're like me, you need bug repellent no matter what. Mosquitoes and no seeums (really bad in Florida!) get me every time. I hate using the repellents that contain Deet, but Off makes something called Botanicals. It's a plant based repellent that really does a good job. Better for kids especially.

Please take and use a mosquito repellant - last year we lost my otherwise perfectly healthy, 52 yo br-in-law to West Nile Virus.

Some stats to consider that many don't know (we didn't until it affected our family) - in the past two years there have been 12,332 reported cases of WNV in the US - 3,766 of these cases have been neuro-invasive (involving serious, long-term -sometimes life-time- complications and physical and/or brain damage), 352 of these cases resulted in death. FL stats over the last 2 years are 135 reported cases, 94 of those neuro-invasive, 8 deaths.

I am not an alarmist and our family continues to enjoy all of the outdoors activities we love - but we protect ourselves in every way we can from being bitten - this is a completely preventable disease which you cannot contract without being bitten. Better safe than sorry !!

Here's a link to the CDC site with more info on prevention: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm

Stepping down off my soap box. . . sorry, just love you guys and wish we had known then what we know now.

OK in all the trips I have taken to the world I have never so much as gotten 1 bite..... That is up until my last trip in December...Yes December.... It was about 6 days into our 9 day trip when I noticed that the back of my calves itched so bad and at first I thought that they were mosquito bites but now I think they may have been something else?????? The only time I can think of that I may have been bit was one night while listening to the story teller at the AKL.... I wonder if they were those what do you call em..No-see-ems? I have no idea but all I know was they lasted for I swear 2 weeks before the stopped itching and finally went away! The wierd thing is they were only on the lowere half of my legs. Never felt anything bite me either. WEIRD!
