Bug Spray?

Just got back from WDW and my mom had packed some bug repelent stuff and I thought she was nuts.

Unfortunately, she was bitten by something and her ankle swelled up, and then the area swelled up into a bump the size of a golf ball.:scared1:

The rest of our party didn't get bitten as much, but I wouldn't take chances. Better to be safe and sorry. :thumbsup2

In all the years I've been to WDW, I'd never been bitten by bugs—until I used bug spray. Last year we stayed a couple of nights at the FW Cabins prior to moving to the Polynesian. I thought I'd better pack the bug spray for the campground just as a precaution. The first night, I put it on and the bugs proceeded to attack! I nearly lost my mind!! The second night I didn't use the spray and they totally ignored me. YMMV

With that said, pack the spray! Not everyone has the same reaction and if I was your wife, and you talked me out of bringing it, and then I ended up with a million bites on me, you would probably never hear the end of it. Bug repellent doesn't take up much room; keep the peace and pack it!

I've never been bitten by a single mosquito at WDW- not in the intense humidity of August, not in the drier heat of January. Never.
If you're worried, pack towlettes, especially with the whole liquids-at-airports situation. Bug spray is a PAIN to get out if it leaks!

Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

I'm only kind of jealous... we leave in 23 days!

Pack it.

We just got back yesterday from a 2 week AKV stay, and the local news stations last week were reporting at least 10+ cases of Dengue Fever in and around Orlando. :scared1:

They said it was carried by mosquitoes that bit in either day or night time, and are inside or outside. Local communities were stepping up spraying schedules (and I am assuming WDW did also).

:scared: YIKES! I'm heading to K-Mart to get the towelettes RIGHT NOW....:car:
[...we leave first thing in the morning...]

....The mosquitoes are ALL on the ferry boats, and in the parking lot, with a few at the monorail. They wait for the giant mass of stank sweaty people to provide them with food and water, and a few jump you in your car....

...they must be part of the gang, the BLOODS....

Not trying to start a panic here...just some info ...camping at FW boards are reporting a LOT of mosquitoes too. FWIW its not deneque (sp?) at this point its EEE...google it Eastern Equine Encephelatis nothing in Orange County but why take a chance? 2 horses and 2 children have contracted the disease and died in other counties. TAKE the spray or towelettes with you

...and to think: I only worried about West Nile Virus...:confused3

I dont remember getting bit by one mosquito in the last two years we went in July.

This struck me as odd being that the parks are built in a swampy area of the state.

I especially expected to get it during Mickey's Backyard BBQ at FW - the place looks like it should be a haven for them - but didnt see one.

My older child asked one of the "envrionmental" CM on Rafiki's planet watch why this is - the cm said that WDW doesnt spray - they use natural predators to limit the mosquito population. I dont buy it.

I also wouldnt worry about carting a bottle of bug spray around. If anything, those towels mentioned in this post are small and easy to carry in your bag.

Ordinarily I would agree with you BUT this year is different and I would feel horrible being somewhat of a local (30 miles give or take) if I didn't post the links and give a post to forewarn.

This year in May was the first time I ever gotten bitten by anything at Disney and I got a whopping 2 bites, we stayed at POR and I'm pretty sure I got them the evening we took the boat back from DTD to POR. I hear of people packing bug spray all the time and just can't imagine why, but some like to be cautious. I just don't see a need for it based on my previous experiences.

To each his own Tabitha but PLEASE read the 2 links on page two and make an informed decision NOT based on past experiences

:rotfl2: Twiddle's right.

We packed the OFF wipes during our 5/07 trip and never needed them. I'll take them again but will just stash 1 or 2 wipes in our park bag on in my purse. They're much easier to carry than the spray. They take up a lot less room and there's no chance of a leak, either.

Now...Does anyone know how to get rid of the love bugs? :rotfl: I keed, I keed. Those were a major nuisance during that trip...but I grew up in Central FL so I was familiar with them. Just walk with your mouth CLOSED!:lmao:

The one year I stayed at Fort Wilderness, I did get bit a few times. It never hurts to bring bug spray. If you don't and you end up getting bit, be sure to bring some anti-itch cream or rubbing alcohol (w/ the rubbing alcohol, you can scratch the bites open and put RA on them. It's gross to some, but it def. helps!):thumbsup2

PACK IT!!! THEY WILL EAT YOU ALIVE.

Why?

Because of this:

  • Watching movies on the beach
  • Riding on the wagon at Fort Wilderness
  • Sunning or Sitting on the Beach
  • Waiting for the Ferry
  • Walking Near Bay Lake

I've never even seen a Florida mosquito after 9 visits to WDW. However, there are reports of Dengue fever in Florida.

Wouldn't hurt to bring them. Not worth the disagreement.

In June we took teh Illuminations cruise and at dusk two of our party complained they were getting bitten. I broke out my handy natural bug wipes and was proclaimed to have a Person Repellant as well as a Bug Repellant but IT WORKED! It sure can't hurt to pack a few small bug wipes in a tiny baggy especially for Dusk and Dawn (err if you are up at dawn....like us!:rolleyes1)

I am about an hr from disney 45min w/no traffic. An infant died in our area because of a disease carried by a mosquito. Last wk a middle age person in Tampa.

I know we are still an hr from Disney. But I would bring wipes just to be on the safe side. I'm sure they spray for mosquitos (our town is actively spraying) but I would like to take extra precaution.

....brought the Off wipes with us: never used them and never got bit ONCE. 15 seconds on my back deck when we got home (NJ) I got bit twice! Go figure....:confused3

Over multiple summer trips to WDW I had never been bitten (and I'm a bug magnet at home) UNTIL this past Wednesday in the MK. I was waiting for family members outside the BTMRR/Splash area near the bushes. My legs were attacked during the 5 minutes I stood there. Yuck!
