I don't know about August, but we were there the last week of June and didn't need it at all. Stayed at WL, so lots of big trees, but no bugs Not at the resort or in the parks. DS usually gets eaten alive and even he didn't have one bite. HTH
If you are just going to be wandering around the parks, you probably won't need it. If you plan on walking very much at night along the resort paths, you might need it. They are predicting a huge mosquito outbreak in the next couple of weeks thanks to all the rain we've received.
been there many times and i ahve never needed it. the last three times ive gone was in august and never once did i see a moisquito. bugs, yes, oyull see bugs. but the bugs we saw were nothing bothersome.
I've occasionally needed some bug repellant in Animal Kingdom, especially in the Boneyard and on the path between the train station to Rafiki's Planet Watch and the actual building. However I don't use bug spray, I buy a pack of individually-wrapped Off! wipes and just wipe them on my clothes, it's usually enough to keep the bugs away.
In late August/early September there will be lovebugs, but they are harmless, fly slowly, and don't really care about bug repellant.
I was in WDW for the 3rd week of August last year and after two days of carrying around bug spray, we finally started leaving it back at the room. I plan on taking a little bottle (if I can find one-maybe a camping store) just in case, but I am an over-packer! Seriously, never even had a mosquito bite!
Summer Disney trips almost exclusively in August, once in July. Don't ever remember needing bugspray...even while just hanging out at night waiting for Illuminations or Fantsmic.
I feel like they don't let bugs in without a Magic Your Way ticket....

WalMart sells little "personal-sized" bug repellant, it's about the size of a lipgloss and has a pump top rather than aerosol. I think it's about a buck and is in the camping section. There are also boxes of individually-wrapped bug repellant wipes available, they are so handy!
