We are going to a one day conference in Amherst, NY this summer. Any recommendations of areas outside of Amherst that might be less expensive but still close? Most hotels in the area are running $179 or more. That's a bit steep for one night....

I had the same problem in that area. I go up there the end of August for a festival in East Aurora. And I can never find an affordable hotel! :confused3 Every place, even little "cheap" hotel names, are over $140 a night (especially Fridays and Saturdays), so with tax you are looking at around $160something.

So I just give up and stay at the nicer places, which usually are barely $10 more a night than the "cheap" ones! I usually stay at the Buffalo Marriot Niagara (I think it's called, couple of exits north of the airport), and just pay the price and live it up!

So if you find a decent cheaper hotel, I would love to know, too! It just blows my mind that even a Sleep Inn or Comfort Inn in that area is priced similiarly to Disney's moderate hotels! :faint:

Hugs, Buffalo Marriott is where the conference is...but it is killing me to pay $179 for one night just to sleep! Hopefully the conference organizers will come out with a deal for the hotel.

You might wanrt to check Tonawanda area, that is close by (make sure the zip is 14150) That area where the marriott is located is close the the college campus and the prices on the hotels right there tend to be higher.

Also the airport area in Cheektowaga might be cheaper and it is not a bad dirve to Amherst from there. Maybe 10 minutes or so.

Wow - that's the exact hotel I stay in! :teeth: I found it was worth the money, even though like you said, it kills to spend that much! I love ordering room service, and enjoyed the indoor-outdoor pool. :)

The only other hotel I stayed at up there was the Comfort Suites near the Buffalo airport, and we got this bizarre room with this giant open window on the bathroom, that looked directly into the rest of the room! There was NO privacy at all! There was some sort of curtain, but it didn't cover the window all the way. You coudn't do anything in the bathroom without the rest of the room knowing what you were doing. And to think I paid over $140 for that room! And the maid threw out all our groceries and dishes. Great. :(

Oh well - just never figured out why that area is so expensive! It's not particularly close to Niagara Falls or any huge tourist place. Good luck on your quest!
