heres what i do
I make a list of every item I need to pay for, get the price then start getting deals and quotes and promo codes and start chipping away at things....most trips I can work a good 4-5 K off the original budget I set...it may mean moving things around re dates, locations etc...flying days can vary with prices....looking for codes or using existing FF points...

you need to have a start point, then you can compare the deals as they come in
keep a folder of notes to refer to.
Also use discount sites like www.mousesavers.com etc to research.

hope this helps!:thumbsup2:surfweb:

A lot of research. I always travel in school holidays, but despite that, I don't like paying top dollar for anything.

Keeping to the budget is another thing. The problem with 'a lot of research' is that you start seeing things you really like and before you know it, you're justifying them. When in reality a cheaper alternative would have been completely adequate.

Initially i average out food per day, say average $150 X number of days, then hotel $200 per night, tickets etc, car hire, flights $1200 each adult. i always over estimate so I have a maximum price that the whole trip will cost, then i can be happy if things come in under.

Exactly as Marvel does, with basically the same estimates! Although hubby says $200 per day for food (2 adults and 2 kids) and I add abou $200 a day for shopping.

If it's somewhere I've been before or I know a bit about, I'll work off estimates. But if it's somewhere new I do some research first and find out what's reasonable.
