Can anyone recommend a good budget sewing machine for a beginning sewer.

I'm not needing anything too fancy. I just mainly want to start doing some DIY projects around the house. I know the basics, but it's been years since I've used a machine so the easier to use the better!

Not so much a specific machine, but overstock.com had some great deals on refurbished machines. I just bought DD a basic machine for about $50.

I can't recommend one specific one but I went with my Grandmother recently to have her sewing machine repaired and I noticed the guy had a lot like over 25 machines for sale very reasonably priced. Considering that I'd consider looking up who repairs machines in your area and see if they also sell a used machine. Or if you know someone who's looking to upgrade. I inherited my machine from my mother when she bought a new one last year. You could try craigslist or ebay.

I have a Brother that we bought from Walmart several years ago. I have been VERY happy with it! It is easy to use, which is important if you aren't a pro.

I use an old cast iron Singer treadle, so I'm not up on the current models, but IKEA has a cheap, no frills sewing machine for about $50. If it's made to IKEA standards it ought to be near unbreakable (barring abuse) and newbie proof.

I got a Brother CS-6000i for Christmas. I have limited experience, and it has been really easy to use. I did a lot of research before settling on this one, and we found the best price on amazon.com.

I also have the Brother CS-6000i (from Amazon) and love it. I'm teaching myself how to sew and have only done a couple of small projects so far but the machine works beautifully and is very easy to learn on. I picked it because I wanted something that could grow with me as I gained more skills. It was around $150 and came with a cover and lots of different feet and also an extension table which I love and can't imagine not having one!

Thanks so much for all the advice. I'm going to look into some of my options today and see what will work best for me!

I have the Singer base model from Wal-Mart, works great for me. :) It was around $80 I believe.
