i don't need anything fancy just something that has ink cartridges that aren't too costly and can print a lot of copies. The one I have now only makes a few copies then I need to buy another $20 cartridge!

Sound like you have a budget printer now if the ink cartridges are only $20.

I think part of the answer is this.. printers (not specialty) are cheap as the companies make money on the ink... As above laser is cheaper in the long run but the toner is costly when you have to buy it... if you just need to print in black buy one that is black only as then you only have one toner to buy and it lasts.... Color you will have 4 to buy and easily cost 500.00 or more for the toner... be aware the toner they give you at initial purchase is "starter" and will not last long.

I just love my new Brother L2380Dw wireless printer. Paid around $90 after price matching and rebates.

Laser printers and toner are comparatively expensive to inkjets, but much cheaper over the long run...

After having two ink jets, and having to frequently spend $30-50 per cartridge, we bought a B&W HP laser printer on sale at Office Depot. It cost more upfront, but the toner cartridge is only $52 on Amazon, and it lasts for about a year with how often we print. For those times we need to print something in color, we send it to Office Depot. Pictures are printed at our local Walgreens.

We did try an ink jet refill cartridge service, and it never worked as good as the original cartridges.
