Budget new baby gift ideas

Do you scrap? You could make a scrapbook for the baby's first year, month by month - all they have to do is add the pictures. I just finished one for my sister; I left premade spots for pictures and hand and footprints.

I am a new mom to a 12 week old baby girl.:lovestruc I agree with others about diapers and wipes that you can never go wrong. I also love the idea of dinners... I can not tell you how many night my husband had to bring home dinner for us because I was too busy or too tired to make it. I also like the idea of offering to come over and do anything (watch the baby/ do laundry/ take other siblings out). All of these are great ideas... and very budget.
The only thing about making a basket with the balmex and other meds can really add up and with you having multiple people to buy for it could get pricey.

Thanks for putting me in your shoes! I can see how dinners and diapers would be greatly appreciated.

Another vote for dinner. When our children were newborns and I was exhausted, it was such a wonderful and much-needed gift when someone brought us a hot, healthy meal. I can't tell you who gave us which blanket or onesie (though I appreciated them), but I remember exactly who brought over the chicken casserole, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and yeast rolls!

Diapers always came in handy too, and as someone else mentioned, get size 2 or 3 so the baby won't outgrow them immediately.

If you have a TJMaxx near you, they have cute baby clothing, blankets, stuffed animals, etc very nicely priced.

Also there are some bookstores online that sell board books at a really good price.

My favorite shower gift, if I know the mom well, know she'd use it, and is well-off enough to be able to purchase any needs for the baby is a scrapbook and some baby scrapbook supplies.

Also, crazy8.com has some cute baby blankets, clothing, toys, etc in themes. You could get a onesie and blanket for pretty cheap, if they're on sale.

I learned - from the DISboards - how to make tied fleece blankets for babies, and that's what I've been giving as gifts since then! I can easily make one in an evening, and they are very useful. I usually pick fleece fabric with a Disney theme but most fabric stories have a wide selection.

Where did you find how to make these??? I would like to make one for my cousin.

Very welcome!!!:goodvibes

Here's one set of directions:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4392701_make-fleece-tied-blanket.html

What I do is, after I cut out the corners, I stick masking tape on the fabric in a straight line, 4 inches in from the edges. That's the line I cut to in making the fringe strips.

Also, when tying the knots (and I do tie double knots so it will stay together in the wash), I tie every second knot moving around in one direction, then I tie the remaining knots going in the opposite direction. I think this helps the finished blanket to lie flat.

Good burp cloths (cloth diaper kind- Gerber or diaper service prefolds work best). You can find cute embellished ones on etsy or if you know how to sew can do it yourself.

We cloth diaper and use cloth wipes so disposable wipes and diapers were of no use to us. (It's a new trend it seems, so something to double check on).

I like to give piggy banks! Buy an inexpensive one, and personalize it by writing the child's name with a permanent marker or paint pen. Stick a $5 bill in it, and consider it your contribution to the development of good money habits!

If you decide to go the "piggy" bank route, try to buy one that's not overly "cutesy" and babyish as it will hopefully be around for many years to come. Of course, it doesn't have to be a pig either - DD12 has one in the shape of Noah's Ark, DD18 still has the clown that my mom bought her when she was born. We had a break in a few years ago - the thieves took the "obvious" coin banks (i.e. the pigs!) but the non-pig designs that just looked like figurines, remained untouched!

Agree with the majority with diapers and wipes.
Although some people have their own preferrence of brands and such, but they're definitely appreciated. And if you get wipes, try to find the fragrance free ones. They are less irritating if the babies have sensitive skin.

If it's their first baby, burp clothes... the first 6 months can't ever have enough of those.

If you're buying cute clothes, go for larger sizes. The smaller ones just get too small too fast.

I remembered when my parents came by after DD was born, they asked what they could get me at the grocery store. I said diapers... they came back with 9 giant boxes of diapers... :rotfl: That was amazing!

I think that was the first time I laughed so hard after DD was born... that wasn't a good thing too... IF ykwim.... :rolleyes1

cute idea! Too bad Disney stock price is 33 something right now. That's probably a bit on the pricy side as far as money gifts go.

Check Barnes and Noble. Ours has the elegant baby gifts on clearance--75% off. I bought a couple of piggy banks for upcoming gifts.

Us too. My aunt ordered a diaper cake for me for my shower and it didn't come in in time. She had no idea that I was cloth diapering until the shower. Luckily she was able to cancel it since it was late. I would have felt so bad that she spent $100+ on diapers that I couldn't use.
