My mother loves family pictures so framed pictures or a small photo album with current pictures is always the fallback gift.
baked goods
new book, cook book? art book?
magazine subscription
new robe or slippers
take her out - for a meal, movie, to a museum
DVD of a newer movie she would like
My DH didn't like this idea: At Walgreens they have a wine glass in a box, painted with the word Mom and flowers for $5.99. I thought it was very pretty.
I just sent my mom (lives far away), a card with a Barnes and Noble Gift Card.
She loves to spend a rainy afternoon browsing in a bookstore so this is something she really enjoys.
Her birthday is also next week, so for that she is getting another gift card to Panera Bread which is next to Barnes and Noble. This way, her and my dad can go "out to lunch" and then browse the bookstore. They are both in the 70's as well and have everything.
How about things that equate to the gift of time? I'm referring to taking her to run errands, cleaning her home, preparing meals, etc. You can give her a calendar with the dates that you'll do these things filled in or you can premake meals which can be frozen and include the directions for heating them.
I like 600 miles from my Mom, the gift of time doesn't always work so well for us unfortunately. We did take her to Vegas for her birthday....well, we paid for the room, she and my Step-Dad met us there.
OP my Mom and I both share a love of making jewelry, I think I will send her a $30 gift card to an online beading store. That's what I gave her last year and she loved it.
I went with See's chocolates for my Mom this year - she's turns 80 in a few weeks, is almost blind, and has some memory difficulties, so there's not much to get her. My sister already sent flowers, so that pretty much left me with a gift of some sort of food. So I went with a half pound of dark chocolate covered caramels (my mother's and my favorite ) and a box of dark chocolate walnut squares. YUM.
When I mentioned I was running to See's on my lunch hour, half my office ended up asking me to pick up something for their Mom too. That was quite a bag of chocolates I left with
Instead of just buying her something, how about doing something with her which you will both enjoy and can share. Maybe take her to a movie or a play, or go to a museum, or spend the day together working in the garden, go for a walk then go out for coffee? I bet she would love to do something like that with you.
Sees Candy is the best!!! My Mother taught me that at a very young age!! You can not go wrong here! Easter bunny and Santa both bring See's to our house!
However....
This year I bought her two cute T shirt type tops from Costco of all places (she lives in AZ and has been cruising a lot) and two grinder jars of seasonings (garlic pepper and spicy red pepper). I hope they will be well received because I hate getting her the same thing every year (See's or Barnes and Noble GC).
DMIL doesn't like chocolate (weird huh I know!) So I bought her a cute nightgown / robe set from TJ Maxx and a crystal wine stopper! (A known wino!)
My Dh was like "Oh I was just going to pick her up a card!" Yea Right! I know better after 24+ years of marriage! Oh and did I mention I made hand stamped cards (which I have done for at least the last 10+ years) and included pictures of our DD's!
Just mailed them Priority Mail today! Yea me!
I will probably get zip! But that's OK It's my day everyday! LOL!
