budget/military hotel in NYC?

I know, budget is relative!

My friend and I are going to NYC in May. We're currently booked at the Soldier/Sailor/Airman's Club (essentially a military hostel, which I guess beats a hostile military ) at $110 for our room. Trying to see if there's something a step up, that's still not a whole lot more. We'll be doing the typical tourist stuff, so planning to stay in Manhattan. Doesn't have to be fancy (where we're booked already surely isn't, lol) but clean/safe area.

We could use either a military or AAA discount. I found a listing of hotels on the USO's page that offer military discounts, but most of those rates were more than the internet rate. (Because military folks don't have internet to see that? I'm not sure.)

Thanks for the link- I'm confused if that place is B&B or apartments they are renting out (or both?)
I should add, we will have her 6 month old with us, not sure a B&B would be the best option in regards to other guests?

Its usually people who are renting their apartments, you contact the owner and arrange to meet them or they will leave the key hidden somewhere.

Make sure you look at the feedback of the person you are renting from. I used it last year and got an apt with a kitchen near disneyland for 50 bucks a night.

I did see Navy Lodge and something comparable at Ft Hamilton (Coast Guard? Link didn't work) and know there is a ferry. I wasn't sure about getting from the Lodge to the ferry though. (We won't have a car. I'm flying, she's taking the train.)
