If I had to do this project, I'd modify it a bit to use what I have at home:-
1) Hat - I'd recycle an odd sock (red or green, maybe argyle); cut off the sock above the ankle area; slip the tube (top) part of the sock onto the cover, glue into place. Tie the other end with a bit of ribbon and decorate with a pom-pom or a cotton ball. I'd probably stuff the hat a little with batting or cotton balls to give it a bit more body.
2) Broom - don't have one, so I'd make a shovel instead. A square cut from a piece of black felt, craft foam or card (e.g. the packaging that my DH's new bike light came in). For the handle of the shovel I'd use a bamboo skewer, a thin dowel rod or the handle from a retired art/ craft paint brush and glue on the black square.
Hadn't planned to do this project but it sounds like fun, so I might try it out. With some red felt or red paint, this project could be modified to make a Santa too
Here is what I am giving this year - altered clocks! I used the Cricut machine to do most of mine, but I also did some without - just use the cardboard clock face to trace around and cut it out by hand. All you need is a cheap clock from Walmart - under $4, and an 8x10 picture.
I used scrapbook paper for some, and 8x10 pictures for others. you will even see a couple really cool Disney World ones at the end.
It's been very popular on the Cricut messageboard, and also at work - I'm even having people bring pictures to me at work and ordering some as gifts.

Oh WOW - those clocks are the BEST! WHAT a great idea....I just love them. Since I have no idea what a "cricut" machine is, I'll be trying mine without. Walmart here I come.
Oh, wow - I've seen the Cricuts in craft store ads, but finally saw one 'in action' on tv the other day. It's apparently GREAT for scrapbooking, crafting, etc. I can't do it justice by saying "it cuts designs out of paper". It was amazing. I want one!!!!
But, back to the clock a couple of alternatives: If there are enough children in your extended family that each age from one to twelve is represented, you could put the appropriate child's photograph in each number spot; or, if you have a group photo from last year's party, you could just use that as the entire background.

Go to the dollar store and see what you could buy. They have makeup, pedicure things, a loofah, candy, christmas mugs where each item is a dollar. Then take cheap pencils and hot glue xmas candy to them and insert them into the cup with some kind of filler. Thus a make do candy bouquet in a mug. Maybe that would win on its beauty and ingenuity for a homemade idea gift. good luck
