Hi,
My family and I are driving to Disney world in June from CT. We plan to spend one night in Savannah. I’m looking at hotels and noticed it’s more expensive to stay in the historical district. Is it worth the extra money to be right in the middle of everything? Any recommendations for good places to stay? Also recommendations for restaurants and activities would be great! Thank you!

We went to Savannah last summer and stayed in the Historical District and LOVED it. Very walkable to see the sites. I have never stayed outside the district so I can't compare to "off site". We stayed the Homewood Suites which was pricey but we had a balcony room and really enjoyed watching the huge barges going by.

Food in Savannah is AMAZING. I would love to go back to eat, if nothing else. We had dinners at The Pirate House, The Lady and Sons, and Olde Pink House. All were wonderful, with Paula Deen's being my least favorite, but glad we went. Definitely go to Leopold's for ice cream, it was sooooo good. We had lunch one day at Clary's which was very tasty and a neat experience.

For activities, we did a lot of touristy things, like walking the historic squares, checking out Forsythe Park (fountain is beautiful!), Hop on and off trolley, and we did a tour of Boneventure cemetery.

Savannah is one of my favorite cities, but I'm biased since I'm from Georgia. We always stay in the historic district when we go and yes, it's worth it for us. I think it might depend on how much time you are going to be there. If you are just stopping for the night and sleeping, probably not. If you plan on doing some exploring, yep. We love the River Street Inn, it is an old warehouse right smack dab on the river. http://riverstreetinn.com/. No it's not cheap but it's not horrible expensive either. The food in Savannah is great, there are the usual chain restaurants and the little mom and pop places and everything in between. Again, according to how much time you have, what you end of doing can run from just walking up and down the riverfront and eating and shopping to taking the trolley tour (which I recommend if you have the time) to walking around the historic district and doing a couple of house tours.

It's been a couple years but we stayed in the Springhill Suites Downtown location - which was about a block from the historical district. It was an easy, safe walk to food and attractions. I remember it was the cheaper of several options at the time and we were pleased with it. I would definitely stay in walking distance of the historic district. The food and drinks (yes, I'm craving some fresh peach sangria!) are amazing.

I would say yes it is worth it to stay in the historical district if you are going to spend time there. You can walk everywhere.

We went for 3 nights in October and hotel rates were insane! We ended up with a really nice airbnb for a lot less, but probably not practical for a one night stay.

We loved Clary's for breakfast, ate there twice (it's featured in Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil). And yes, Leopolds for ice cream!

I live in Georgia now and went to Savannah for the first time last October. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Savannah. It's not what I consider budget friendly but it's not over the top. Free breakfast. Clean rooms and absolutely a great location. River Street in front of you and Historic District behind you. Just steps. Can't beat the location and walkability. Parking can be a nightmare. For dining there is the ever popular Pirates House with their famous fried chicken, Vics (right across the street) which is a little more pricey but food is very good and then there's the famous Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. I believe doors open for that at 10 a.m. (better check) but people start lining up hours before. Yes, we did it, waited 2 hours in line. It's a family style, southern food also known for it's fried chicken. Very small place with something like 5 large tables. I think they bring in people 10 at a time. Line wraps around the corner and then some. I didn't enjoy the wait but I'm glad we had the experience. There is also the river boat cruise. They offer meals like lunch and dinner but I think the food isn't that good. Most people just go for the ride. Check out Leopold's Ice Cream. Again, can expect long lines after dinner. Go down to River Street to the candy kitchen and enjoy the pralines, they even have chocolate flavored! The address for the Holiday Inn Express is: 199 E Bay Street Savannah GA 31401. (912) 231-9000. I keep it in my phone because I would definitely stay there again. Right across the street is a Hampton Inn (on same road) if you want to comparison shop.

My parents live 20 minutes outside of Savannah, so we go there 2-3 times a year. My SO and I will often get a room and spend the night so we can have a "date night." We have stayed at the Hotel Indigo, Hampton Inn and Home2Suites and have been pleased with them. Are they under $100, no :-( I do notice on my way into town that the Thunderbird Motel is ALWAYS packed and is probably cheaper. If you have never been, it is definately worth staying downtown and exploring the squares and the riverfront. The trolley tour is great because you can see the major attractions in a short amount of time. My kids also enjoy the rolled ice cream a couple of blocks down from Leopolds (the line can be very long!) It you enjoy cocktails, you can also drink while walking the streets as long as they are in a plastic cup. I would also recommend the Pirate's House if you are taking children.
I think everyone should visit Savannah at least once :-)

Thank you everyone! I’m really looking forward to spending sometime in Savannah.

I was looking at the thunderbird inn. Do you think it’s walking distance to most places? Thank you

If there is any way you can add a day to your trip, you won't be sorry!

We stopped in Savannah on our way to WDW in March and it was so lovely. Hope we get the opportunity to go again, I really do. Sorry, no budget hotel ideas in Savannah itself as we stayed in a Red Roof Inn out of town and drove in the next day, but just wanted to wish you a nice time there.
