Budget Buster & lesson learned!

The wind blew my DH glasses off his desk and he accidently stepped on them. I immediately went to the optical shop to see if they could be repaired. Nope, they need to be replaced and the cost will be 341 Euros. I went ahead and ordered a new pair, and then dreaded coming home. My DH job got cut to part time and I am not working. Once I told him the cost of the new glasses, he exploded, to top this off he has a job interview this afternoon. I urged him to let it go, as I did not want him to be sullen and moody during his interview. Big lesson learned: pay attention to where your eyeglasses are and remember to put them back in their case I am now getting ready to fix some spaghetti as I need comfort food!! I am also keeping my fingers crossed that this interview goes well!

I also wanted to add that I do have a job, but it is in Beijing, China and I start it in 4 weeks. As for the cost, I ordered the same frames and it is the lens that were expensive. He originally got them in Abu Dhabi, and they were expensive. As for the job, he wants to stay here in Germany, instead of going home to Detroit, and he needs to work full time or 2 part time jobs. The two jobs would be easier for him to finish his online degree. I am so bummed right now, and only spaghetti will make it better!

When we went to Typhoon Lagoon while at Disney, DH put his glasses rolled up in his towel and set it on the beach chair. When we came back from swimming, DD sat down on the chair to dry herself off. She sat right on DH's glasses and broke them. We had to go to one of those 1 hour places while on vacation to get him a new pair. They weren't cheap!! So I feel your pain.

My DH's glasses once blew off his face and into the ocean when we were on the Disney Magic! He was walking around inside with his sunglass. LOL. We got him a new pair in St. Thomas, thankfully a good portion of it was covered by our travel insurance.

Glad to know that these types of accidents do happen, and I didn't even think about checking our health insurance to see if they will pay for replacement etc. as I am pretty sure that as of today, he is officially part time and our coverage ends!

On our last trip to Disney I was careful to pack spare eyeglasses. They were our previous prescriptions but good enough to have gotten us home.

My glasses would cost about $600 without insurance since they are a complicated progressive lens prescription.

Ouch! I just ordered Rx sun glasses and regular glasses. Before any discount in was over $1000 but glad to get then down to only $650 for both. I feel your pain.

Sometimes you can claim accidental damage on your house insurance. My FIL knocked his off mowing under a tree and was able to claim them.

We do have Renters insurance, I had not even thought of that. THANKS to all the posters who shared thier own accidents and valuable advice. I have just calculated the exchange rate, and now I just feel sick to my stomach. Hopefully, DH will come home with some good news!! or the other option is to drink heavilyI knew my fellow Disers would understand!

Careful, sometimes that is the root cause of accidents with glasses.

I was camping with the buddies, lots of beer. We were at the river and I dove into the river. Up I came and noticed everything was a lot brighter, but a lot blurrier. I dove into the water with my prescription sunglasses on. They've been somewhere on the bottom of the Clarion River in Pennsylvania for 20some years now.

I lost a pair of glasses to a lake about 5 years ago. It is hard knowing you could have so easily prevented the need to spend all that money, sorry OP

Glasses in Germany are very expensive. My transitions lenses with titanium frames which run about $350 in the US cost 700 Euro here. Luckily we had bought extra optical insurance so that paid 350 Euro towards the cost.

I also wanted to add that I do have a job, but it is in Beijing, China and I start it in 4 weeks. As for the cost, I ordered the same frames and it is the lens that were expensive. You plan to go to China without your DH? And he has a visa which will allow him to remain here even without currently working or studying at a German university--and not as a spouse to you working in Germany. The German visa system fascinates me--I do hope you will tell me how this is working.

In the depths of the filtration system of Typhoon Lagoon holds my friend's prescription Oakleys. Really expensive prescription sunglasses...

Only once did a pair of glasses fall off in a pool. I was cannon balling into the pool with a couple other kids at Beach Club. They just fell to the bottom, and I was able to retrieve them, with a nice scratch on one of the lenses.

I feel your pain. I just lost my less then 6m old glasses 1 week ago....$300 down the drain and I just can't afford to run out and buy another pair. I'm suffering with magnifiying glasses from Drug store.

BTDT with DH and DS. Camping, swimming, boating, roller coasters .. sigh. I now swear by two products:

The floating version is a lifesaver, though I'm not sure you could retrieve them if you dropped them overboard from a cruise ship! (... but with a Croakie on them, they wouldn't blow off.)

These are wonderful for swimming and for contact sports where really keen vision isn't necessary. The company makes full-on Rx sports goggles/glasses, but their step-dioptered versions are a great more affordable option, especially for water sports. Just last week I overheard a Dad trying to explain to his young son why he couldn't really play at Blizzard Beach -- because he was afraid of losing or damaging his glasses. I just had to stop and tell him about these.
