budget buster for VDay..garage door spring broken

gees, I am really beginning to not like Mondays...nothing like $150-200 repair to get your morning going.Ughhhhhhh.
I had asked DH if we could kinda skip todays treats etc in favor of not going over budget ( gas for the cars has done that for us already) I guess this will decide it for sure. Luckily the weather temps improved. If it were still 10 below out this would be awful.

Hey Pam--sorry to hear about the garage door. However I may have a bit of helpful information.

Last year I thought I needed a new garage door (older house, blah, blah). I called this company and the guy told me I absolutely did not need a garage door (would have been an easy sell for him). That I just needed to have one of the springs replaced, and possibly the second one. He called their service department and set up an appointment for me. I was so impressed by not only the sale's guys honesty but the professionalism of the service guy that I actually kept their card.

I ended up having both springs replaced (there was talk of reworking one--it just seemed easier in the long term to replace both and was not that much more), I think I paid about $140 all in. The place is Doors By Russ 815-436-2450, they are based out of Plainfield, but service Naperville.

Also check the Naperville town calendar or some of the clipper type magazines or coupon mailers. I think they run a discount coupon (I did not have one at the time of my repair, but remember finding one a week or so later---I was so happy to have a "fixed" door I didn't even care).

Thanks!Really nice of you to get the # for me I will give them a call, last 2 quotes for 2 springs were both over $250( including the place who did it last time) which is nuts. At least we got the door open allowing us to get the cars out. We did find a coupon in a recent fly for $20 off I think....waiting to hear back from them. I will pay a little more for the 25,000 spring vs 10,000 but over 200 is a rip.

Um, are the springs above the door on the door wall or are they above the tracks and are hooked up with cables? If they are above the door then you are stuck as they are under torsional stress and need to be replaced professionally. The ones that are above the tracks and hooked up with cable are easy to replace. You can replace them yourself and home depot will have them. If they are above the track just open the door all they way and stick a piece of wood under the door to hold it up. Undo the cable and then unhook the spring from the support. Reverse for the instillation. The spring above the door on the wall is much more complicated and can be dangerous to change.

hmmmm. doesn't sound like the door needs replacing, but the spring or get a new gargage door openner. This has happened to us and my DH just fixed it. Heck, he built most of our house and all of our additions and he put the gargage doors in himself, actually he built the gargage. I say try to contact a handyman and see if they can replace the spring or door openner. I guess I'm lucky that my DH does all of the work around here (and other family members too). If you lived in our neighborhood, I'd send him over. You can try craigslist as lots of handyman services are generally available there in your area.
