Budget Buster- Emergency Vet Visit

^^ Free to a good home at 3 weeks old?? Shaking my head at some people!!! I'm so glad to hear you found them and raised them to be healthy kitties, good job!

The antibiotics must be doing something, she has turned into a ravenous beastie that wants meat. Apparently her tummy must have been bothering her since we got her and that made her not want to eat. Unfortunately she's exhibiting some food agression that was never there before. I'm hoping that once she realizes that she will never be hungry again and will always have a full belly it will stop.

Thank you, Now you see why I couldn't say No when my son asked for her. I was a sucker for a pretty face.

What a sweetie pie! I can see why you fell in love with her.

Thank you, she is a sweetie and she won me over with those great big eyes.
My DS isn't to happy as she was supposed to be his baby but with all the care she has needed she has claimed me as her momma.

She is beautiful, thank you so much for sharing her picture!!!

Thank you. That little face even won over my DH who swore there would be no more after we lost our male a few years ago and it broke his heart.

I had a rabbit at the vet earlier this week. They have very delicate digestive systems and if they stop eating and pooping, it can quickly become an emergency. Because they are prey animals, they try not to show signs that they are sick and weak. By the time they start acting sick, they're really sick! I have four rabbits and am pretty well tuned into their signals. My one little guy didn't want his treats on Monday morning. He usually attacks them! When I got home from work at 3:00, he still didn't want to eat and he looked lethargic and uncomfortable. I was able to get an appointment for that afternoon.

His tummy was gassy and slightly distended. He got pain meds, fluids and a motility drug to get his intestines moving. So four days and $173 later, he feels fine! I even had to section off the pen that he shares with his brother so the sick guy could have his own litter box. Otherwise, I couldn't tell how much of the output was his and how much was from his healthy brother. They do not like being separated and spent most of the time nose-to-nose through the bars. But, it was necessary and they are very happy to be back together now. Pets can be expensive, but they sure are cute!

Thanks for taking care of a kitty in need. I am a soft heart when it comes to kitties. We found a stray kitten near the road a few summers ago (near a house that is notorious for having lots of stray/feral cats around it). Took it home for the night and put it in a box in the laundry room (to quarantine it away from my other cat until it could be vet-checked). In the morning it was very quiet and lethargic and didn't even stir when I entered the laundry room. I thought it was dead! But I made the decision right then to take it to the emergency vet after dropping DD at the pool for practice (it was about 6am). Well.... long story short, it was recommended to euthanize due to extreme flea anemia. That euthanization plus the lab work and exam set me back about $400! When they came out to ask which body disposal plan I would like to chose (the private/single cremation where you can retain the ashes for about $300 or the group cremation for $100), I told them I was opting for the "take it home and bury it in the yard" option.

I figured out after the fact that the kitten had cost me over $50 for each hour it was within my posession. Such a sad little thing. I felt like a FOOL when I cried in the waiting room when they gave me the prognosis and let me say good-bye to it.... and even more foolish for letting my DD name it! But I guess I wouldn't have done anything different... I would never have just left it there......................P

Such wonderful stories!

We adopted two little kittens a year ago, they were both on a euthanasia list at a local shelter and about to be put down.

After having them home just 24 hours, the littlest one acted so strangely that I took him straight to the vet. He had a temp of 105 degrees and had to be put immediately on a drip and observed for a day. When I was able to take him home he still had a high temp and I had to hand feed him with a dropper, force feed him small amounts of water, and help him go to the bathroom for three days.

Today, that little guy is my own personal shadow. He is on my lap as I type this. His favorite place to sleep is the crook of my neck and he is at my feet wherever I go in the house! I am certain that experience bonded us together. Today both our guys are happy and healthy!

$4200 this week for our cat, emergency surgery to remove a 3" long, 1" in diameter hairball in her intestine. Would have been $2,500 more but they were able to "push" it out without having to open up her intestines.

12 years, I figure we have spent $1,000 a year with her chronic health issues and a few emergencies. She was the runt of the litter and I am told runts have more health issues. Most of my friends spend more than that on their smartphones a year, and she is a whole lot more company than a smartphone. We all make choices.

I fought having another pet and lost, but this will be the last. But I will spend the money necessary to keep her healthy, and comfortable, as long as it does not come down to only prolonging her suffering.

TinkerPam, God bless you for helping that kitty. I have two cats, one a boy from the pound where he had no name, just a sign reading "Unwanted stray". He was about 5 weeks old. My girl, Carmelita, was brought to me by a neighbor at about 6 weeks and they were going to abandon her too. She's all black and is so sweet - if I hold her by my face she'll kiss me! They are my babies...my family and I love them so much. :lovestruc

I agree they can be SO expensive...Daxter (the boy, an orange tabby) used to be allowed outside for two years until he kept getting in accidents and ran up the vet bills so much! I haven't had the heart to ever add them all up but I'm sure it'd be $3,500+. I joke and tell him "Mommy could've gone to Paris for that much!" but I love them both and feel that a pet is a commitment and you need to take good care of it, no matter what. We've given pills, medicine, changed bandages, helped him in the litter box when his leg was in a cast...yikes. Now he's indoor only because I know otherwise he'd use up all those "lives" and I'd be in the poorhouse!

Happy that Oreo is well and thanks for looking out for that living creature. She'll pay you back with love in spades.

as far as the jealousy.. it will take time for the other cat to warm up to Oreo. From my personal experience it usually takes about 6 months. I know that sounds like a long time but it will happen.

Just don't forget to pay attention to your older cat as well. I know a kitten is fun and spunky to play with right now but its very important to also interact with the older one who might be feeling left out.

6 months on what planet? Were going on a year and its still horible... Only progress is shad and boo can sit on oppsite ends of the couch and be ok
