I'm going on 4 weeks with a bruised tailbone.

I bruised it sledding.

I thought it would be healed by now, but no such luck. I have a cough and it hurts when I cough.

Is there anything I can do?

I took the week off from the gym thinking that would help and nope, still hurts.

Is there anything that can help speed up this healing process?

Ouch! I can sympathize, I did it many years ago also. From when i remember, it took several months (yes, months) to not hurt at all. Sitting was the worst... Can't recommend much except time, anti-inflammatories and cold packs. :) Hope you feel better soon!!

I can take a really long time, have you been icing it? I find ice works wonders.

Get a coccyxgeal pillow (I got mine at a medical supply store) and use that to sit on. I suffered with mine for over six months and finally got a cortisone injection.

OP Are you sure tail bone is only bruised? Not sure what can be done if it is broke.

The reason I asked is that after my back surgery last year I started having tail bone pain again I had forgotten all about my tail bone problems. After getting my tailbone checked out I found out my tailbone has in deed been broke maybe as many as 3 times or was broke in more than 1 place when it was broke. an what is supposed to be at a 45 degree angle is now at a 90 an nothing can be done to ease my pain other than pain pills that I really do not want to take.

So please do all you can to get checked out an problem corrected.

I don't think it's broke.

I actually am not in that much pain sitting anymore. My posture has greatly improved b/c I always slouched at my desk and now have to sit upright.

It's just annoying that I feel discomfort when I cough and I can't really workout. I did try working out a week or so after and I was able to do somethings, but was limited.

I have not been icing it at all. I'm going to try that.

My coworker had to sit on a donut and he said his took about 2 months to heal.

I consider myself lucky that I don't need a donut, but am pretty miserable otherwise. I really think it's the not working out that is getting to me. I think I'm going to try to get back to the gym next week and just take it slow. I thought taking the week off the gym would help, but it obviously is not helping.

UGH!

After 4 week of pain please go to the doctor to make sure it is not broken. My friend suffered from tailbone pain for months after delivering her child. The OB/GYN said she bruised it during delivery. After two months of pain she went to her primary and took xrays. Turns out it was broken during delivery. Cortisone shots and physical therapy to strengthen the lower back was how she recovered. It took her almost a year to fully recover.

I have a funny story about this that was NOT so funny at the time...

I was on fertility pills to get pregnant, when I slipped and fell on the ice, severely bruising my tailbone.

Let's just say that DS is here, but....the beginning of him wasn't pleasant.

I iced it, sat on the special pillow, etc, and honestly didn't feel completely better until late summer of that year. It seemed to take FOREVER.

So good luck, be patient, and it will get better, eventually....

My DH hurt his once during a sledding 'accident' of running into a curb. He was in pain a long time (htough I don't remember the timespan). Hang in the OP.

I have broken toes and I have injured toes to the point where I thought they were broken. Sometimes the pain seems very similar and it's hard to tell. Sometimes, it's even hard to tell if bones are broken on xray. I would suggest going to the dr to make sure. You definitely don't want it to heal wrong like a PP stated.

I slipped and bounced down cement steps on my tailbone when my son was a baby. It took some massage therapy on my sacrum to completely heal it.

IF I decide to go the doctor, do you go to a regular doctor? I haven't been to my regular doctor in years. My work does free routine bloodwork so I consider that my yearly physical. I only go to the Dr. if I'm really sick which hasn't been in a long while.

I'm assuming my regular Dr. is not going to do a thing.

Would I be better off going to the ER for X-rays?

I still don't think it's necessary as I'm not in that much pain. But, let's just say I decide to go, where?

Although, I suppose I can get something for this nasty cough my coworker has shared with the office.

DON'T GO TO THE ER!!! Horrendous waste of money. If you go, just go to your regular doc or to a walk-in clinic. Both are perfectly capable of ordering an x-ray and referring you to therapy if needed. That being said I wouldn't go. I fell on my deck and bruised mine last fall. It was a good two months before I was okay. I couldn't work out or do much of anything physical...god forbid I'd cough. Kids learned a few new words during that time. ;) I found I had to sit vertically too, which for this sloucher, was a problem. I didn't get a pillow (my ego wouldn't allow it.) I would just shift from cheek to cheek every few minutes.

This sounds like me for sure. It's not even painful to sit anymore. Just painful when I cough and when I try to work out.

:sad1: I guess I'm just wondering if there is any miracle exercise or drug that will help this thing along.

Time...just time will heal that god forsaken tailbone. :)

Mine has been broken twice - both times almost 30 years ago. When I started having pain with it my doctor told me that if the cortisone injections didn't help they could do surgery to remove the bone, which would take the pain away. If you're in that much pain from it and other options haven't helped, I'd ask about the surgery if you don't want to be on pain medication indefinitely.
