Brown Derby that bad?

I’ve been fretting over what to do for dinner on our Hollywood Studio day. None of the restaurants in the park really appeal to me. Mama Melrose might be ok, but we’re already planning on doing Tony’s one day in MK. Not sure if it’s worth leaving the park to have dinner somewhere else or not. Last time we were there, Galaxy’s Edge nor the Runaway Train or Slinky coaster were open, so HS was only a half day park. But now it seems like HS is easily a full day. We normally like to get to parks at opening though so we are usually ready to go by around dinner time. But I’m just trying to figure out what to do since none of the options in HS sound that great to me. Honestly I wish we could just eat at Disney Springs for every dinner, but that’s a lot of travel time unless you just cab it.

We really LOVED 50's Prime Time when we went in 2019. Our server was really fun, and even the kids loved it. The food is standard comfort food, but it does taste really good. If you already have a meal booked there, if it were me, I would keep it. You will not regret it, even if it seems a little late. You could always take some light snacks or grab something light to hold you over, if you need it.

My daughter is a picky eater and has always enjoyed her meal at Brown Derby. IMO eating earlier is with kids is always better than later, no matter where it is. PTC is more fun, but it also can depend on your server.

2 children and a 1 year old toddler will find Brown Derby Restaurant very boring and meltdowns may break out. It allows children, but is only good for them if they sleep through it.
Teen foodies and film fans might enjoy the signed caricatures, if they know who the signatures belong to. I would say keep trying for Sci-Fi Dine-in, it is a lot of fun. But I am 67 years old, and some of the movies pre-date me! I have read reviews of people who were shocked how scary the movie clips are. I think of them as funny 50's "scary" movies---giant ants, 50 foot tall woman, both from nuclear testing fallout. Late night babysitting movies from long ago. But again, might not be right depending on your kids' ages. Cancellations and openings happen all the time, especially within 24 hours you need to cancel to avoid the no show fee. Good luck. I hope you enjoy your choice.

Definitely. I have been to 50s and been to Sci-Fi before for meals. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Hoping to score something else. The 1 year old is great in restaurants. Took him to a steakhouse last week and was good for the hour we were there so not worried about that. Thanks.

It was a 7 PM reservation - we dropped it. Park closes at 9 and we didn't want to end our park day at a restaurant. Thanks.

Rainforest Cafe at AK is Landry’s.

I just did a Yak walk up with the card Thursday for lunch. BUT for our May trip, it was extraordinarily busy and everyone seemed to have a Landry’s card so the wait was for 45 min even with the card. (For our little party of 2).

We liked Yak and Yeti. We used our Landry's membership and did a reservation via the Landry's site at that time (2016). Can't do that anymore unfortunately. That was nice. Got the upstairs corner window - great view of the park.

I actually really like the CS locations in HS. Had a 'steak' (it was a thin cut but very tender and well seasoned) at the commissary and I think I've had a sandwich (chicken) and a salad at the one over by Star Tours, maybe a hot dog can't remember. Plus if you are the type, the little walk up by the dinosaur, has really good snacks.

Pretty much Brown Derby is my go to but I've never been there with kids. I have seen kids there and never seen one kid act up or out of place, but to be honest it's like any grown up restaurant you might go to at home. Make sure you bring things to occupy them, have snacks incase they don't want anything on the menu, and make sure you set expectations.

Can the Lounge accommodate a group of 6 or should I get a reservation at the restaurant?

My family is going with another couple that makes it a point to sit in the lounge each trip. We have never tried it, but have heard good things and would like to make sure everyone gets to go to their favorite places this trip.

I have lunch there all the time - but it is expensive and kind of upscale, the sort of place where you don't just run in, eat, and run out, which is likely why a lot of persons working through a full park day shun it.

The oyster and brie soup is their regular winter appetizer! I always get it.

We like Brown Derby a lot, but we're not going this time because our smallest will be 18 months and he's really awful at staying still for more than ten minutes. I don't want to inflict that on other diners, and Brown Derby has rather slower service than a lot of other restaurants on site which was key in this decision.

It's so dependent on the particular kid. Our oldest was absolutely fine at the same age; it's very personality-driven.

We WILL be taking him to Prime Time, which will be much easier for him to deal with (there are little TVs, the kids' options are good and there's some nice interaction with the staff - and they're fast).

Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex at Disney Springs are also Landry's.

So while the food was well prepared and the service was excellent we found two things that we did not like about it
1) small portion size….granted I know that’s part of the problem with everything is that portion sizes are too big but we found these too small
2) it was overhyped in our opinion
