Our 4 year old washing machine is making an awful noise during the spin cycle. We are no longer covered by warranty. We called Maytag and they referred us to their local service company. We scheduled an appointment for this morning from 8-12. Around 10 I called to see if they could give me an ETA and they said they do not have us listed for an appointment. The person who took our appointment left the area code space blank on the phone number portion of the form, so the appointment got stuck in pending and was never scheduled. So i tell that company to forget it. GRRRRRRR!:headache:

So we call around, get one company who says they can come out today they will let their repairman guy know, he will be by the house around 5 or 6pm. The rerpair guy calls and asks about the noise the machine is making, I let him listen to it over the phone. He tells me it is a rusty bolt on the transmission and costs more than a new washer to repair. I really just got the feeling that this guy didn't want to come out, I think because it is a weekend and he thought he would be done earlie rtoday. Now DF does not want them to come, because he thinks this guy is saving us the hassle and we should go buy a new one. It is 80 bucks to have them come out to look.

We can not afford a new washing machine! I think we should have a different repair company come out and actually LOOK at the machine, but if they tell us the same thing DF is going to be really mad at me, cuz then we will be out teh service visit fee plus the cost of a new washer. But I just can't see taking this guys word for it, an over the phone diagnosis. The machine is barely 4 years old!!!!!! It should not need to be replaced!!!!

I would call someone else. An over the phone diagnosis doesn't cut it with me. I would want someone physically looking at it to tell me whats wrong. Just tell your DH you want to get a second opinion. If the second guy tells you th same thing then you will know for sure. Hopefully it's an easy and cheap fix for you.

does it sound like a plane taking off? Is it one of the neptunes?

FWIW I work in a different industry but for a repair company none the less. Very, very often we will give a client the courtesy of a 'phone diagnosis' if it is something that we are 99.9% sure of without even looking at the problem. We don't do this because we don't want to be bothered, who wouldn't want the $80 in their pocket :rolleyes1 (in our case we charge almost twice that, but again different industry), we do it because we are trying to do the client a little bit of a favor. I would say probably 80% of the people that we give a phone diagnosis at no cost to the client, for something that isn't worth the cost of repair, end up coming back on another occassion for a different problem, maybe even to buy a new product, because they remember we were kind enough not to charge them for a service call and waste there time.

On the other hand, the guy could be completely wrong. Since he gave you an idea of what the problem may be are either you or your DF handy enough to take a look?
