Broken Ankle

Welcome to the "My Spouse is in a Boot" club. We don't sail until October, so I am hoping I will be able to leave the club soon. My husband has been in a boot since March. Toe removal followed by 2 broken toes that won't heal...and the boot wearer is stubborn about not always wearing the boot when he is supposed to have it on. I know he complains about how the boot slows him down. It is not just heavy, but awkward. So make sure you are accommodating for the amount of time it will actually take to get you from point A to point B. I think the CMs will do whatever they can to help you out, especially in the dining rooms and the buffet. The knee scooter sounds like a good plan too. I would rather have it and not need it than get on the ship and wish for one.

We are on the same cruise! I've been watching for a cabana and forgot to check yesterday. Good for you!
I'll be sure to lend a hand if I see you guys need one!

I'll second the recommendation to ask for extra pillows to prop up her foot/ankle! I broke a bone in my foot earlier this year, and it throbbed by the end of each day. Even the weight of a sheet was too much on it. We ended up using two sets of covers on the bed, so I could stick my foot out in the middle of the night (otherwise we would have had to swap sides of the bed).

I just worked with crutches, but if you do decide to go with a knee scooter, I've heard not all brands/types are created equal. Some are harder to use than others, and some are really tippy.

Carnival had an elevator for handicap use. My DH has 2 hip replacements & cannot climb down stairs. They had a crew member posted on all floors with a radio calling the elevators for handicaped people. Also for disembarking for shore excursions. We signed up at the muster drill

You might want to see about renting a collapsible wheelchair. It will store easier in the room, you can have it with you when you check in, and you can have it IF she needs it on the ship(not sure if you will have Disney's the whole time on the ship). Depending on how you are getting to the area, it might be nice to have in the airport.
Best thing I did was to get a lightweight transport chair for a loved one. When she was tired, we just pushed her around to keep up.
  • works great at the airport, plane and ship
  • Vancouver was great, but extreme tides at Alaskan ports was a challenge on/off the ramps. Not sure how others on scooters would handle it.
  • The Wonder had a large indoor metal cap that made it a challenge to cross on some decks. I assume there's a
  • The indoor/outdoor ship entrance lips was a challenge with the transport chair's small wheels.
  • I was unable to fit the wheelchair through a regular cabin... loved had to walk the 15 feet from the hallway to the regular room. That was acceptable to avoid the cost premium of an accessible room.
