I am really missing having broadband, since we moved from Windsor we are on the standard dial up connection - you can't get Broadband down here yet - the telephone exchanges haven't been updated

Well that sucks Richard - have they given any indication when they will be updated ? Fingers crossed it won't be too long for you.

Nope, AOL say they will email all of their customers in my area with details of when/if they are going to be updated. I have 'registered my interest' on the online BT/AOL form about 20 times so hopefully it wont be too long yet!

Oh Richard, I feel your pain. I went from a cable to a dial up for about six months--drove me insane. Just that sound of a dial up connecting makes me cringe.

How attached are you to AOL/BT Richard ? Is it worth looking to see if NTL or Telewest provide cable broadband in your area ?

We've been with NTL for a couple of years now and I can only imagine what it would be like to go back to dial-up again!

Hi Paul,

We have always found AOL to provide a great service and we have been with them ever since we have had the internet. We all like the extra AOL features and having its own browser with automatic email notification. Plus all of our friends and family are with AOL too, so the Instant Messaging is a great added bonus.

However, having had Broadband for a while was really great, then moving house and having a standard dial up connection (I know what you mean about the noise Steph - it drives me mad!) has really been annoying, at peak times we sometimes have to reconnect to different AOL access numbers because it is too busy.

What are NTL or Telewest like? Is there a website for them with a preview or a system where I can check if they will be able to offer broadband? How much do they cost? AOL Broadband is £27.99 per month. If I connect to NTL or Telewest can I still keep my home phone with BT (we want to stay with BT on our home phone) and just have a NTL or Telewest line for our second internet line?

By the way Richard you can still use the AOL IM. I have AIM but I do not use AOL if you know what I mean.

One possibility might be to keep a basic AOL package if you can, and use another provider to actually get an internet connection. Might be worth looking into that one.

So far as cable goes then both NTL and Telewest have sites where you can check for availability. The NTL one is at http://sales.ntl.com/index.jsp?cust=ntlhome_homeinternet and the Telewest one can be found at http://www.telewest.co.uk/packagedesigner/postcodesearch.html

We have phone and cable modem with NTL but i'm 99% sure that you don't have to take the phone service as well these days.

So far as cost goes, NTL are £24.99 per month for a 600Kb download speed. We have 2 PCs connected via a small router and this speed is more than adequate, although a 1Mb service is available for £34.99 if you'd like.

Try your postcode out and let me know what you find - fingers crossed that one of them will have cabled your area in the past!

Neither of them (Telewest or NTL) have availability at my postcode.

Oh Well, I guess I will just have to hang on and keep remembering to 'register my interest' every time I sign on, hopefully somebody will be able to offer it in our area soon. It would be a great idea to keep a basic AOL package if it is available and then have a connection through a different company.
