Brits Involved in Bad Accident in FL

I am so shocked at Florida car crash of the British Family. What a sad sad end to what should have been such a magical holiday.

I hope the children recover and that they have other family members that help them through the times ahead.

Thanks for moving moving my post Kaylee, i posted at same time as you.

i was reading on the Dibb that someone knows the lady who died, tragic for them.

My thoughts are with all involved.

It seems according to reports that they missed their junction so tried to do a U turn on the 27

Just heard about it on the radio...pretty nasty....according to 5 live, they had just landed, gone to the hotel, and were on their way out to a 24hr store to get some food. I suppose it was a combination of being unfamiliar with the vehicle, tired, unfamiliar with the roads and driving style. Still, the roads must have been pretty quiet at that time in the morning, does anyone know exactly what junction it was ?

It was on the 27 just south of the junction with the 192 .Apparently they had turned into Polo Park as they had missed the 192 turn off heading south and were turning back north when they hit the tanker .

This is a really sad accicdent i read about it in the paper yesterday. I feel for their children and familys so much i hope they have family to help them through this.

Does anyone know if a fund has been started somewhere for these children? In the US or the UK?

Hi Susan - I would think that almost certainly some sort of trust will be set up where they live and/or their places of work but I can't find any details. It's probably too new at the moment.

Such a tragedy.

Yes, I have read about this area of road on some US local websites.

Aparantly last month they lowered the speed limits, and put up "NO U-TURNS" signs. If thats so, its a great shame they werent adhered to. :-(

I wonder if, when he made the turn, he looked the wrong way. It's entirely plausible. I don't drive in the UK, I have enough trouble on the right side of the street. But, when I'm over there, I've stepped off the curb several times and almost been killed--cause I looked the wrong way.

Could be Steph - when I've driven in Florida I always had to think twice at junctions and intersections so I knew which way to look and turn. I think a lot of accidents with UK drivers in Florida happen at intersections :(

I'm the same when I cross the road abroad - always look the wrong way LOL

Oh my. We were caught in the aftermath of this accident. They towed the MPV away past our car and it was a mess. The tanker had spilt its load over the highway and we were diverted over to the other carriageway. We saw it reported on Bay News 9 that night, but they never said the family were British.

How awful. We saw an accident a day on our trip this year, it was so disturbing. The driving was terrible...people switching lanes without signals, u turns, pulling out. Please, everyone, take care whilst driving in Orlando....leave plenty of room between you and the next car, be aware that the long highways like US27 distort the distances of oncoming vehicles..they can be on you in seconds. Allow a few moments to be sure you are safe to manouvre. So many people are unfamiliar with the roads (over xmas one car in 3 was out of State plated and probably many more FL plated hire cars) it really does pay to be that much more cautious when driving in Florida these days. It used to be so quiet!

This will be our first time driving this year, and it looks retty scary. I think I will leave it to DH.
