British food

Oh dear the picture of the cornish cream tea was so wrong. Scones for a cream tea should be plain and not filled with dried fruit..

Mmmmmmm...

mushy peas, proper fish and chips, cornish pastie's, a good fry up, spaghetti on toast and my absolute fave which I can't find here in the US Vanilla Slices.

If you have or could get me a recipe and PM me I would be forever grateful.

Lived in the UK 4 years. Loved it. Would go back in a minute....

i want to try authentic british triffle pudding. I wish I had the recipe.

What recipes are you after? I'd love one for mushy peas.... my Aunt used to make lovley ones when I was young, but she is no longer with us and oh how I loved her mushy peas.

I'm pretty sure I have a recipe for Pasties and Vanilla/Custard Slice, but if you let me know just what it is you are after I can go raid my MIL's old recipe books;)

A Cornish Cream Tea

I'll have mine without the cream please Sam... don't like Cream.. just the scones, with a teensy scraping of butter and strawberry jam please:goodvibes

When we visited the UK, our favorite meal was Steak and Guiness pie. The best we had was at an old pub in Oxford....right smack dab on the banks of the river Isis, which eventually turns into the Thames. So beautiful there.

I also LOVED and still crave Garibaldi (I think?) biscuits. When I told an acquaintance there how much I had enjoyed them the day before while visiting my husband's co-workers, she exclaimed, "Oh! You mean dead fly biscuits!" She really got a laugh out of my expression, because for a moment, I was thinking, "Uh-oh!" She then assured me that they did not actually contain dead insects of any type.

On about our 6th day there, I remember walking into a deli / bakery for lunch. All sandwiches were egg & onion, prawns & slaw, cheese & onion, egg & prawn. I thought I was going to cry as I beseeched her whether she could just please make me up a plain ol' ham and cheese. She looked at me like I had two heads, but took pity on me and whipped one up. She didn't seem too happy about it though, bless her.

The thing I missed the most while dining in the UK? ICE CUBES! What is UP with that, Brits? :rotfl:

I forgot to mention my favorite UK treat... Cadbury Flake
Cadbury's%20Flake.jpg

How close is that to a Cadbury Twirl? I have some Cadbury Miniatures Chocolate in a box (well, cardboard tube - think Pringles) that a friend of mine brought me back from Europe. I LOVE Cadbury from Europe.

Kimya

a recipe for a cornish pastie and custard/vanilla slice. I used to walk to the local bakery everyday at luch to get one. Mmmmmmm.

If it's not too much trouble throw in the mushy peas too.

Memories..... like the corner of my mind
Misty water color memories.....
of the food I ate.....

(lyrics edited to suit my needs :teeth:)

liked Malted milk tablets. They are available here through the mail. I get them every once in awhile.

Curlie wirlies (?) the braided chocolate/caramel bar were good too. We had then in the US but they were call Marathon Bars then.

I also miss my cooker as it had the broiler on top of it instead of the bottom or in the oven. Made it easier to do the tomatoes for the fry up.

Branston pickle. Brown sauce.....

mmm, sausage roll, please! :cloud9:
bangers and mash, and cornish pasties.

A little OT, but the "chippie" thing reminded me of something. My ex-bf was from England, a smoker and was used to referring to cigarettes by another name whose meaning is VERY different in the U.S. He knew about the difference, but would forget occasionally when he first came to town, and walked into a liquor store one day and asked the clerk "What sort of fags have you got?"

We have quite a list of things that the inlaws have to bring with them when they come to visit from Canada, things dh grew up on and we cant get here in the stores. Many of those I was familiar with from DH Very Scottish Grandmother.

Just wondering what some of those things were. It is interesting to see what everyone eats and enjoys!!!

DH and fam is from England- first time I went over there for the full breakfast, I almost gagged. I hate baked beans and seeing them there for breakfast?!! :scared1:

However, I have been able to make some awesome Scotch Eggs and Shepard's pie. I'm still working on perfecting the pastry for the Sausage Rolls. A real fish and chips shop opened up a few miles from here and DH is so excited that they actually have real English sausages battered up. I'm more of the fish person.

Love English food!

A Chippie here in Australia is another name for a Carpenter :)

They bring down Good Host Ice Tea ( DH lives off the stuff in the summer), Coffee Crisp ( for me ;) ), Aero, Cadbury Crunch and Old Dutch chips. There is more Im sure but that is the list Ive made up so far for mIL when she comes next month LOL

Some of that we can buy at World market but its way more expensive.

Not sure if you get these over there Sam, but we love them... I know someone in Canada who does too....

We call it honeycomb.. but in Canada they call it sponge toffee:confused3

Lamingtons? Do you have Lamingtons over there Sam? I know we have so much that is the same, but there are still some things that are different.
