Britches

while DH doesn't use the word britches, he always calls shorts short pants. It drives the kids and I crazy when I tells us he's going to go get "his short pants on." He also calls chewing gum chew gum. Can you tell he spent many many hours with his grandparents?????

britches and trousers are words like great grandma used, pants are pants or jeans. Underwear is underwear, not underpants.

Heh, I say britches every once in awhile. =]. I think it's a cute word.

Ahem...BREECHES (the proper word, but yes pronounced britches) are what one wears when riding a horse. I have several pairs in many colors and designs (full seat, self patch, knee patch, pull-ons etc).

I have heard people refer to their pants as breeches, and Larry the Cable Guy can often be heard referring to his "under-breeches".

I think I remember hearing britches on Little House on the Prairie. Honestly, although it's kind of cute I'd start calling them pants. He doesn't need to be teased about that.

agnes
looks like you and I have to both get our eyes examined!!!
I was wondering what someone could have done to warrant an entire post titled, well, never mind!!

My parents and grand-parents call them britches, but I haven't carried on that tradition. ;)

Powellrj, my dh calls shorts short pants too. It drives me Crazy! He's the only one I've ever heard do that before.

My older DD's dad calls a suitcase a "valise," along with about a dozen other old-fashioned words I can't recall at the moment. I have never heard him say britches, however. (Gotta be careful the way I type that!)

My dad used to say britches, and he called underwear skivvies.

My mom called the fridge an ice box and I did until my DH, then boyfriend, laughed at me about it. My parents were older when they had me and they actually had ice boxes when they were growing up. I was the only kid in class who's parents had lived during the depression!

And PJ's are what you wear to bed here.

Hmm...the only time I've heard/used britches in real life is when someone is "getting too big for their britches" which means you have to "knock them off their high horse" ;) Never in reference to actual pants.

The only other thing that came to mind was the American Girl Felicity movie where Felicity steals Ben's "Sunday britches" so she could go ride the horse.
