Britches

I tend to call my ds pants britches. My mom and dad used to say it too when we were kids. I never thought much about it until one of my ds friends laughed when I said "go change your britches" to my ds. Granted he's 5 but he said those are called pants, not britches.

So, should I start calling them pants or can I stick with britches? Does anyone else call them britches?

My step-dad calls them britches, but he's usually saying it tongue in cheek. When he's serious, he calls them trousers. That one bugs me to death.

I call them pants.

It reminds me of the Little britches rodeo. Every time I yell "Get over here you little Britches!"

Here's one of the few times I've heard pants referred to as britches..

I'm losing it... I call them droopy drawers.

I say "pants" in reference to those worn by myself and my husband. However, if it is my daughter or another little kid, I call them "britches." I have no idea why.

That's me too, I only call the kids pants britches.

Only in the expression "too big for your britches". I know someone from the NE that calls jeans "dungarees".

And I bet you had to lie down a spell on top of your bedclothes (I started a thread about calling linens bedclothes a while ago, apparently it's popular with the great-grandmas).

Nope, at least that's not what we call bed clothes. And I think dictionary.com (or some online dictionary, anyway) agrees with me.

Britches and trousers sound like something a very old person would say.

I call 'em britches every once in awhile. In fact, last night DH asked me to bring his sweatpants out of the bathroom when I was done and as I came out, I told him, "There's your britches!"

I usually say pants--DH calls them trousers but he's British. He can't help himself sometimes.

No. And pants are what one wears underneath -- underpants.

The ones you wear on the outside in public are trousers, unless they are jeans.

I fall in the camp of calling little kids' pants britches, but not very often anymore. I think it sounds cute!
