We're spending one night in Bristol, VA on our way to DC this summer. I was hoping to visit a local (non-chain) restaurant that won't break the bank. We won't be up for "fancy" as we'll have just driven about 10 hours :). If you live in the area or have visited, what places would you recommend? We'll be staying at the Courtyard, if that helps narrow the choices.

Thanks,

oh, oh, oh. I LIVE in Bristol, TN :cool1:

There are a ton of little deli type places on and just off State St. (right down the middle of town. Half the street is in Tennesee and half is in Virginia)

There's the Troutdale Bistro. I've not eaten there, but I've heard it's quite good but pricey.

Others include:

KP Duty (soups sandwiches)
Manna Bagel Company (soups sandwiches)
Machiavelli's (Italian)
State Street Grill (ribs, wings, chicken etc.)

On Volunteer Parkway:

Mad Greek
Fatz

At Exit 7 (Bristol VA):

All sorts of chain restuarants
OCharley's
REd Lobster
Outback
Logan's
Chili's
Perkin's Cracker Barrel
etc.

If you really want a great place to eat.
Take VA exit 14. (if heading north, turn left; south turn right)
Turn left onto Lee Highway.
Less than a mile on the left is a little mom and pop place called Alison's.
Their potato soup is to die for!

HTP. PM me if you want more specific info.

Thank You!

Alison's sounds like what we are wanting to try. We are devoted to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Networks and love the little places. My only question is whether Alison's serves lots of peanuts or peanut products. My DS is highly allergic and will start reacting if there are lots of peanut proteins in the air. There are some great catfish joints in our area that we can't visit due to the peanut shells and the fabulous Five Guys Burgers is a no go as well.

Thanks for posting!

I just ate Mad Greek today for the first time(we are from JC) and it was delish, especially for the price(gyro w/fries and drink for 7.99),hummus wrap and baklava good too. Ridgewood BBq is another option, it is a dinky place towards Elizabethton , maybe 20 min. drive. A lot of famous folks have been there and they have autographed pics. Very good, very mom n pop type place. When we went the waitress was nice, but we have heard some of them are real dry, but I've heard it is something of a local joke, like part of the "uniqueness " of the place. It is the yummiest bbq.

I second that I am local as well and Alison's is my favorite restuant. It dosen't look like a lot on the outside but the food is some of the best in the area.

I'm not sure if they do or not, their phone number is (276) 628-8002, you may be able to talk to one of the managers to see if they use peanuts in anything. Unless they are using peanut oil then I really wouldn't think so.

Mad Greek is good as well but I am an Alison's girl all the way.

How could I leave off Ridgewood BBQ????? It's a bit hard to find, though.

I think you will thoroughly enjoy Alison's (if the whole no peanut thing works out). Don't be put off by the exterior. Seriously. It's good eating. The prices aren't outrageous either.

Thank You for all the recommendations! Dissers are the best :thumbsup2!

I think we are going to try Alison's (Thanks, blairbear for the phone number) and then try either Mad Greek or Ridgewood BBQ on the return trip for lunch.

My DH was amazed at how the Dis can answer anything :woohoo:.

You guys are the best!

Thanks,

OMG my Parents live in JC!!!!! Sis is going to the culinary school in bristol!!!!! Small world in deed!!!!!

Anybody know if Alison's is open on Sunday? We'll be driving back through there in a couple of weeks. We usually wind up eating at one of the chains mentioned below, but that sounds heaps better.

I've eaten a couple of times at the Ridgewood and it is certainly worth a visit.

Don't know, but the phone # is listed above. I'm sure if you called you could find out that information.

Wow Tri Cities people who knew there were so many of us on here. I live in Church Hill and would recommend Ridgewood BBQ too.

Ain't it fun being a southern girl????????????
