The family and I will be buying snowglobes and I have read on the boards that we cannot take them aboard. I have a question. I was looking on the tsa website and it says, "Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home if .." and in this list it includes snow globes. Silly question, but what exactly is checked bag? Is that my carry on or the other bag that I pick up in baggage claim? If somebody could please help me out because this is actually the first time I am planning a vacation on my own. :thumbsup2

if its in your checked luggage that goes under the plane yes, if its in the bag you carry through security with you no

I wouldn't pack a snow globe in my checked baggage! Just have Disney ship it home for you...my DCousin forgot all about the fact that her snow globe was in her carry on and got stopped by TSA and had to ask at the Disney store in the airport if they would ship it home for her...they did but what a hassle! Better to have them ship it home for you when you purchase it.

So in other words, I AM able to bring back my souvenior snow globes along with me?

Yes, you can bring snow globes back, as long as they are packed in the suitcase that you will pick up at baggage claim when you get home.

You cannot have snow globes in your carry-on bag. They will be thrown away at airport security.

A checked bag is one that you check in at the airport rather than carry on to the plane with you. They put it in the cargo hold. Then when you arrive, you go pick it up at baggage claim. NEVER put medicines or valuables in checked luggage. ALWAYS, keep at least one change of clothes in your carry on. ALWAYS, put checked sun screens, tooth paste, lotions, etch in baggies in case they get crushed.

I would have the snow globes shipped if possible rather than put them in checked baggage.

Yes your checked bag is the one you pick up at baggage claim. A carry on is, well it's one you carry onto the plane. Congrats on your trip! The TSA rules can be confusing that's for sure. If you decide to put your snowglobes into your checked bags make sure you carefully and insanely wrap them in bubble wrap and a leak proof bag. They can be broken in the rough handling that goes on with checked baggage. The airline is not responsible for broken items in your checked baggage. I would suggest just shipping the globes. At least you can insure them in the unfortunate event they do break during transport. I'd still bring shipping supplies with me, such as bubble wrap and a leak proof bag.

Also remember the 3-1-1 rule. I totally spaced out last year and packed my shampoo, cream rinse, suntan lotion and a few other things in my carry on. Thinking if my checked bag was lost I would have these things. Oooops. Nope. They all were over the 3.4 oz limit and were not in a quart size bag. Had to toss them in the trash and buy new once we arrived at our vacation spot. Won't make that mistake again.

The rule is (from the TSA site) 3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring.

Only if it's in a checked bag, one that you get at baggage claim. If you are taking just carry-on luggage, which is luggage you keep with you on the flight, you shouldn't try to bring it. It will have to be mailed.

You wouldn't bring a snow globe in your checked baggage? I'd have no problem doing this. I'd just wrap it with my dirty laundry so it's cushioned. Did your cousin just forget to put it in her checked luggage, or was she flying with only carry-on? Why not pack it in a checked bag-I'm missing something. :confused3

Just ship them home so much easier and if they are broken in transit Disney will replace them. It happened to my mom. She shipped home a bunch of ornaments about half were broken, Disney replaces the broken ones no questions asked.

A checked bag is one that is not carried onto the planewith you.It is loaded onto the plane by baggage handlers and you pick it up in baggage claim a the airport. It can cost you $20 and up to check a bag depending on the airline ( Southwest is free).I would NOT but a snowglobe in a bag even if it is well cushioned. For one it will increase the weight of the bag, and airlines now charge more for overweight bags.Second,If you saw how some of the baggage people handle the bags , you would think twice. They throw, fling and shove bags on top of bags with no regards as to what is in them. They don't have the time to handle with care since they are trying to get planes loaded an unloaded for connections etc.Have Disney ship it home, it is just easier

I remember once I flew to Indianapolis for work with just a carryon. While there, I went to the Titanic exhibit that was in town, and bought my kids 2 small snowglobes. I fly all the time, and totally and completely forgot that they couldn't go in the carryon. I just bought them because they were small and cheap. Of course, TSA confiscated them. When I got to the gate, I had to scramble to buy my kids new souvenirs, LOL!

My sister did a similar thing almost 2 years ago, she bought her son a plastic sword and we were flying carry-on only. They made her check it, but I don't remember if she was charged anything for it.

Thanks to everyone who answered. I guess I'll cross the bridge of deciding whether I want to ship it or take in luggage when I get there. lol :worship::yay:

I second this...

I second this as well. You don't need to box it yourself and take it to a PO. It's EASY as you don't even have to carry it with you from the shop. Just fill out the form right there and it will join you at home within days. Putting it in your luggage is exceptionally risky. They get broken all the time! Luggage is handled VERY harshly. Even if the globe is packed in the formed foam box, it can still easily get broken or leak. This is how we bring home our globes now. :goodvibes

A friend of mine was tring to bring some home for my son from Europe and 3 of teh 4 got crushed and she knows how to pack. SO there really isn't anything you can do to be safe enough. No matter how much buffer you thought you had. The only time I've ever packed any where tiny, cheap little ones that I could fit within a huge, heavy-weight souvenir plastic cup.

Also, are the cargo holds pressurized? I've read stories of bags of coffee exploding in checked baggage, and I wonder about a snow globe...

Also keep in mind its not just water in snowglobes. Its a combination of things and will leave a slimely oily mess if it breaks usually full of glitter, not to mention the disappointment of getting home to a broken treasure.

You will not be allowed to carry snowglobes past airport security because they contain liquid. This is a TSA rule. Has nothing to do with the airline.

Shipping may be easier than packing them yourself, and if they break in transit I think you can get them replaced.

I really don't think the selection of snow globes they sell in the parks has been nearly as good since this rule went into effect.
