I know I will need his birth certificate and a notarized letter from his mom (she has sole custody and his dad has no visitation) granting permission to take him out of the country as well as granting permission to seek medical care. We are driving down, so no issues with the airport, but is there anything else we need?

There is a Disney form online for a minor traveling without parent that you should have signed also. I always suggest a passport but it doesn't sound like THST is an option but I would never take a kid outside of the U.S. without a passport especially one that wasn't my child. Also assuming he goes to the kids program you will need to decide if he can get in or out of the club without an adult. you don't say how old he is. Our grandson was able to go in and out of the kids club in his own starting at 11.

A passport isn't really feasible for his mom or step-dad. We are also going on the Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Fantasy, so visiting British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Castaway Cay. I don't think a passport is as critical as a Western, but I may look into getting him a passport card. He will be 7 when we go. My kids will be 11 and 10. I know they will be able to sign in and out if we allow them, but he won't. So we probably will only allow the 11 year old sign in and out privileges (she will go back and forth between kid's club and Edge).

I am pretty sure you need a passport for the Caribean

Since it's a closed loop cruise and a minor, all we would need to show would be his original birth certificate. We cruised with adult friends who only had to show their original birth certificates and driver's licenses. I was just wanting to make sure I have a list of all the papers I need from his mother.

Save your money. If mom can't/doesn't want to spring for a full passport book, the card does nothing different than cruising with a birth certificate. In the event of emergency, he cannot fly home with a passport card but would need to get an emergency passport book issued before flying.

Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks! I think we will probably just go with his birth certificate.

Bear in mind that the passport makes it far easier to fly back into the States if there was some kind of emergency during the cruise. I just wonder if a lack of passport AND you not being a custodial parent would really muck things up in such a situation.

Odds are 99.9% that you would not have such a problem, but still.

I would also bring along any applicable medical insurance card/information for the child

That is a good idea! Thanks!
While this information is probably a good idea to have, you'll find that any medical treatment necessary must be paid for out of pocket, and reimbursed once home. Even if you have one of those rare polices that does cover out of country expenses.

True, but if something happens pre-or post-cruise, or if you are transported to a mainland hospital, insurance card would be handy.

I agree, that's why I said "this information is probably a good idea to have".

That is an excellent suggestion. Something even simple that would take you to a "convenient care" outlet in the US while traveling to/from the cruise, the insurance card will make life so much easier.

We are going to WDW for a week before the cruise, so it would be handy to have.
