Bringing home bottles of alcohol

I've read that people regularly bring home bottles of alcohol from Cozumel, etc. My question is, did you drive to port? Did you pack the bottles in your checked baggage on an airline?

My husband wants to buy a few bottles, but I'm trying to figure if it will be a pain to get them back home again.

Thanks!

I brought home a case of liquor and saved about $10 / bottle from the retail prices in Michigan, even after paying the customs inland revenue duty. We just used an extra suitcase to pack the boxes in and it came off the ship with our other luggage fine. We did drive to / from the port.

We got 3 bottles, and then checked with customs as there were only 2 adults and you only get 1 per adult...luckily it was too small an amount (about $2 the custom lady said) to charge us anything, they don't usually start till it hits $10...in Cozumel they put nice netting around the bottles, and we put it in our carry on.

We drove. We put some of it in our luggage and carried some off with us. There are some great deals, we were sorry we didn't pick up more..lol.

For us flyers, we always pack it in our carry-on luggage. Bags get tossed around way too much to put breakables in checked luggage.

While we didn't bring any liquor home from our last cruise, in the past when we did it was packed in a pretty sturdy cardboard box with a handle.

I actually did gamble and put it in the checked luggage (but that was pre-911) but had put each bottle inside a zip bag and did a LOT of padding around the whole thing with the dirty clothes!

I have seen quite a few folks carry that box as a carry on too.

we always pack in our carry on luggage, and have done this many times with no problem.

Deb, we've done the d.c.padding once or twice too. But then I always invision getting my luggage at baggage claim and it smelling like Caribbean rum.
You're right about the handled boxes too. When you can get them they're great. We had one from Napa that we used a few trips ago. But it has since been donated to the trashman. :p

We always carry our alcohol on the plane with us. It is a pain but definitely worth the bother. Hmmm, think I'll go open that last bottle of Nassau Rum and try to imagine that I am on a tropical island.

Thanks everybody. That's kind of what I was figuring. (I've seen those luggage commercials!)
