I know it needs to be prepackaged and not homemade. Does it need to be in your carry on or can it be checked?

Thanks

I wouldn't put it in a checked bags. They are less than gentle with them when delivering them to the rooms:

I bring Larabars and Kind Bars and I check them. I purposely don't bring anything I know I can find on board.

It can be in either. Only beverages must be in your carry on. Consider what it is that you are packing and how you would pack it. If it's something that could get completely destroyed if your bags are piled up the way they are in the pictures posted above, or if it's something like chocolate which wouldn't do well out in the heat, I'd put it in your carry on.

Thanks. I will see what room we have in our carry ons as we are flying as well. My son doesn't like sweets and only likes salty snacks so i was thinking of bringing on some of his favorites to have each day and for ports. He is autistic and non verbal so as this cruise will already be a challange I wanted to make sure he had food he liked to eat to at least make that easier. My others can pretty much live on ice cream so they are covered!

We split snacks between our checked bags and carry on so we'll have some to snack on during the bus ride or in the port if we have to wait a little while for our boarding number to be called. That way, we have our immediate needs taken care of, and have some extra for the rest of the cruise. I don't know how well something like potato chips would fare in the checked bags, but we've checked sturdier snacks like Clif bars and Goldfish with no problem if we protect them somewhat. We've been known to put individual bags of snacks in a small shoebox or something similar when we put them in checked bags for a little extra crush protection. When the snacks are gone, the shoebox goes in the trash, and now we have souvenir room.

Thanks for all the helpful info. I had no idea you couldn't bring opened bags back onto the ship! The small pouches are my plan for my dd who is 4 - my picky eater. However, once my one year old sees her eat something, she wants the same thing and she still eats the "baby" sized goldfish, which don't come in pouches... hence the open bag questions!

We always travel with snacks both in our checked and carry-on luggage. My girls love to munch on Goldfish, and I buy the big boxes at Sam's Club. I have started packing them in those Ziploc food storage containers - like Tupperware but very inexpensive and I'm not worried about losing them. I put the loose Goldfish in a sandwich-sized container and keep in the carry-on for plane and bus snacking. I've never had a problem carrying these on/off the ship, but maybe I've just been lucky. When the Goldfish are gone, we then use the small container in my backpack to carry and protect our pre-packaged snacks on excursions.

I use the bigger Ziploc storage containers to protect the snacks in my checked luggage. It also helps keep all of the snacks together and, when I'm unpacking, I can just put the container on the desk or shelf.

Definitely consider yourself lucky. It clearly states that food is to be in unopened packages taking it on or off the ship. Be ready for a hefty fine when busted coming off the ship (and yes, I meant to say when because eventually a port dog will sniff it out).

Saw this happen on our last cruise in Jan. Had to go past port dogs in Cozumel. A family was busted for carry food in ziplock bags. They were seen opening their bags right in front of the guards and taking the food out. The guards didn't care that the family said that they didn't know they weren't suppose to bring food off in baggies(despite there being large signs stating this right where you get off). The family was fined. I can understand it can be a hassle to have to bring only food that is factory sealed, I also have a picky eater, but the law is the law.
