I rarely carry cash at all, so I need to get prepared. I am wondering how much/ what form of cash to bring for touring the islands? Planning a beach day on our own in Tortola and a morning DCL excursion then exploring on our own in St Thomas.

1. In Tortola, can we use USD? i have not read of anyone exchanging money.

2. Should I bring lots of smaller bills like 1's and 5's or is there no problem getting change for 20's and higher? ( for things like buying a bottle of water and renting beach chairs and umbrellas and taxis)

Yes USD are accepted everywhere practically. Some placed might not list $ prices but ask and most will still take.

You are probably better $20 bills and below but most places can change if its a really tourist area s they will have a good amount. Also watch as some places will give back in Caribbean currency. St Maarten as where I found this out which was fine to me as I collect money and so had some to take home. Coins seems to be where it happens the most but as long as you keep an eye out its fine.

Yes, we always bring USD and have never had a problem. I wouldn't bring anything larger than a $20 -- maybe get more tens and fives. Have fun.

The currency in both Tortola and St. Thomas is USD :)

Here are some of the costs in Tortola going to Cane Garden Bay, lunch at the beach ($10-15ish), mixed drinks ($5ish), tax ride ($8 each way/per person). They also had rentals on Cane Garden, if I remember correctly it was $1 for a pool noodle, $5 for a floating mat, $5 for a life jacket and they also had stand up paddle boards for maybe $30ish?. Also, beach chairs are $5 per chair. There are also a few souvenir stands. Hope that helps you a little :)
