Bringing backpacks to the park??

When I go to other parks I usually bring a backpack and fill it with water bottles(2) and snacks for the kids with my camera and autograph book. I get the impression from this board that at US you don't do that or can't. What I mean by can't is you aren't allowed on the rides with them. Can you not put them between your legs or hold on to them?? I understand the roller coasters but what about the rest of the rides?? First timer going to US.

You can do that for all rides except:
MIB
ROTM
Hulk
Dueling Dragons

Those four have Free Lockers.
