Hi everyone :wave2: Our annual trip in August is coming up and we'll have our newest family member with us this year! It is usually me, DH and DD11 and we're used to the August heat by now because we've been going at this time for quite a while.

So now I'm wondering what are some ways to "beat the heat" with the baby? I know at 5 months you're not supposed to put on sunscreen or give them water so any other suggestions out there? We plan to go indoors as much as possible, get a stroller fan, and maybe even a cooling towel. We really can't wait to experience Disney with her and want to make it as enjoyable as possible.

Thanks for any tips/suggestions :thanks:

DD is 5 months now, and she gets cranky very easily when outside for too long. I would just try to take turns keeping her in the AC as much as possible.

You can use sunscreen. Just not on his/her face. We're bringing our 3 month old in 2 weeks and purchased a HandyCooler from amazon. It's a personal cooler for his stroller. Other than that just making sure he drinks enough formula to stay hydrated and checking to make sure he's peeing he'll be fine.

Yes we definitely plan to do that :thumbsup2

Good to know about the sunscreen...I haven't had a baby in 11 years so it's been a while :rotfl: And I'll have to look into that Cooler, sounds like a good idea :thumbsup2

Double check with your pediatrician on the sunscreen. Current AAP recommendations are still six months in general, but you can use a little on the back of the hands. Lightweight SPF clothing will help more with coverage. A cooling towel is a good idea and as PPs have said, try going inside as often as you can. And bring a blanket as the AC can be cold!

I have cared for many children (childcare provider) through the hot Boston summers. I find that a stroller with a little more room in it works well .Car seat strollers are ok but they hug the babies body no air can circulate. I use a stroller that can lay down pretty flat ,a terry pad or folded towel under the baby. They still sell nets for strollers and they protect against bugs. Also I always carry a beach towel and put it over the stroller against the sun.A great powder to pack is Caldesene (pink container)it is great for prickly heat . Pull out a few of your recieving blankets they make great light coverage for air conditioning.Remember to keep babies feet out of the hot sun. Some strollers have the bassinat attachment and that would keep babies feet up ,but not many for 5 month olds. Check with your DR,about sunscreen ,I can not apply until 6 months but maybe they will tell you differantly.I always feel the less chemicals on baby the better.Often my infants wear a lightweight pant and that keeps them out of the sun. Have fun. Also clothes pins or clips(chip)are great for keeping the towel over the stroller.

I talked to a pharmacist and at five months, baby sunscreen is fine. It's not something you'd put on everyday but for a week, where unexpected sun exposure might occur, it's not a bad idea. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor and ask for recommendations, and if they think its ok for your child. Avoiding the sun is of course best, but I'd rather be doubly sure.

She goes to the doctors in a couple weeks so I'll be sure to ask him then about the sunscreen

We're not bringing the car seat so she'll have room in the stroller. And I love the idea of bringing clips to hold the blankets on, thank you!
