Uggggg..... I know this has been debated.... ad nauseam....but I need opinions. DD's best friend is having a surprise birthday dinner tonight. The family is going to be out of town on the weekend and decided to invite her friends for dinner at a local restaurant and make a surprise party, of sorts, out of it. DD spent alot of time this weekend choosing a gift for her friend. The Mom sent email invitations out weeks ago and when I just looked at it to confirm the time, I realized that it says.....Please, do not bring a gift. :scared1:

So, I'm conflicted. Part of me thinks it is rude to disregard her parent's wishes. Part of me feels weird showing up to a party without a gift...period. Then there's the fact that the gift is already purchased. DD is very excited about the gift that she picked for her friend.

So would you just have DD bring the gift to dinner or should I hold onto the gift until the next time DD plays with her friend outside of school??

Before I even got to the end of your post, I was thinking just go to the dinner, and save the gift for the next time they get together. That way you are honoring the mom's wishes, and your DD still can give the gift she spent time selecting for her friend.

I agree

i agree. :thumbsup2 plus you wouldn't want to make the other kids feel bad/embarrassed for not brining a gift.

I would actually plan to give it at a later date like suggested, but I would bring it with just in case everyone else shows up with something!

Give the gift outside of the dinner party. Perhaps you DD can tell her friend at the party that she has a gift for her and she'll give it to her later.

Thanks! I'm going to plan on her giving the gift at another time. We'll invite her friend over later in the week. I have to pick DD up a little early from the dinner, so I'll keep the gift in my car....just in case. It would be my luck that everyone else shows up with a gift and DD is embarassed.

I just talked to DH and he had a good point. He said...." Good thing you didn't notice that until this morning. You would drive yourself crazy deciding whether to go ahead and even buy a gift. This way, you only have to obsess about when to give it. " That man knows me too well!:rotfl:
